New build / update, bottlenecks and opinions ?

Hello, 

 

I am updating my build from 2012, where i have i7 2700k on ASUS P8Z68-V PRO GEN3, which i feel i have taken as far as i can :) i would say my budget is not relevant, but i would like to hear some possible problems with this build, and possibly other options within reason of these parts. I have some love for Asus, their boards have served me well for over 20 years, and the only time i have had a board break down on me was when i tried another vendor :) but i realize i have chosen a expensive board.

 

I have updated my old pc a few times, but now i feel the board and CPU need to change. I live in Denmark and will be using this pc to game mostly, i play Dota2, but am looking forward to dipping my toe into VR and the new Cyberpunk game. What i will be using from my existing PC is my GPU and PSU, which are ASUS ROG STRIX GTX 1070 Gaming OC and Corsair HX750W. I have a little debate with my self on if i should get an M.2 drive as right now i am running samsung evo 850 500Gb and is just beginning to be limiting. But i think i may wait with updating storage and GPU until at a later date.

 

These are the parts i want and i was wondering if it is a solid build or there are some glaring bottlenecks in the system. it is a Micro ATX build, as i like the smaller form factor while not sacrificing too much power. I am little bit worried about cooling the i9, but i think i have addressed that with some extra case fans. Other things i have looked at is the number of USB 3.1 gen2 ports as i think those will be more important for VR in the future :) Another worry is that i am overdoing it with the 4000Mhz Memory.

Yes, the 4000 MHz is a bit excessive. 3000 or 3200 MHz is the current sweet spot. 

As far as I am aware asus fcked up its power design on current Gen motherboards. They usually get not recommended by anyone on the forum. 

I for myself still have to look into what specifically is wrong on which boards. 

And I think going 140 $ just for case fans is extreme :D

Asus boards on Z390 have one problem: They are overpriced by at least $100 compared to their competing brands' offerings.

You might encounter with RAM OC instability even with XMP, it's not always stable. Other than the motherboard's power delivery issue, there aren't any glaring bottlenecks here. Usually people pair the 9900k with an extremely high end GPU like a 2080 Ti, 2080 or 1080 Ti though, not very common to see it with a 1070. It shouldn't cause problems but you likely could have saved money by getting 16GB of 3000-3200MHz ram and a non ASUS-ROG motherboard(they're all extremely overpriced). There are other m-ATX Z390 motherboards that don't cost $300 and are pretty good. The extra money likely could get you an RTX 2080 if you sold the 1070 as well.

I realize Asus is more expensive, but after viewing a few videos online on the board and Micro ATX boards(there is not a wide variety) i feel good about the choice, expesially after seeing this video and this video. I am not into Hardcore Over clocking but i do like to over clock some.   

 

The reason i am not updating the GPU is that i have only had it for a year, and will probably let it due for 2 years more and then update to whatever is good at that time. But i will probably drop the 4000mhz ram and get 3200mhz instead. Possibly spend that savings on a Samsung 970 evo 1tb M.2.

only if you regularly move large files around(like 4k videos), nvme ssds won't give you any significant performance boost over a sata ssd.

the 5 phase Gene is not bad enough to have power delivery issue, it's just ridiculously overpriced for its performance. At least it is mATX so there's a positive reason to buy it. I still consider it a silly purchase though.

I would just go with the ATX Meshify C personally as it isn't that much bigger than the mATX version. That way you have a lot more options on ATX boards.

 

Meshify C - 395mm x 212mm x 440mm

Meshify M - 395mm x 212mm x 399mm

 

So there is only 41mm height difference, which is hardly anything. The other dimensions are the same.
