Choosing a GPU for I5 4690k

Looking to upgrade my systems GPU have an i5 4690k and want to know the best GPU to use that will not cause any bottle necking on either my CPU or my GPU.

MSI Z97 Gaming 5 MOBO

16gb DDR3 G.Skill Sniper Series 1600

Intel I5 4690k CPU 3.5-4ghz

Corsair H100I PRO AIO

Seasonic 600-650w PSU (cant remember lol)

Liteonit LCT 128GB SSD

I wouldn't get anything above a 1070 GTX for that CPU.  Just make sure to do some sort of overclocking on it.  Especially stock speeds this is not a powerful CPU and what not.

Get a GTX 1070 or 1070Ti anything above that makes no sense.

I was leaning towards a GTX 980TI i dunno if the 1070 would create bottle necking from what i have gathered

A 980Ti is identical to a GTX 1070 in gaming and more powerful in workload tasks so assuming you are going the used route just get the cheaper of the two assuming it is in good working condition and from a reputable seller if you buy off Ebay. That said, with an older 980Ti you may want to consider replacing the thermal pads and paste. Just verify the card works first.

4 threads can be Maxed in some games.

8threads gets the most out of 4core chips.

I had a 4690 and saw huge perf drops (at random)

I7 Cured a lot of issues.

Those super demanding games don't drop my GPU usages anymore.

 

Many games did it before... Chasing Higher FPS and Multicore aware games... Kill GPU usages with High CPUusage games.

 

GTX1070 on 4threads Max.

Because even then it'll still neCK a bit.

Awesome did not know that they were almost the same thanks man may just go with the 1070 then lol

Ok so what i need to do is get an i7 and a new gpu then to get the best performance out of my rig???

Need is subjective

With a new GPU the performance may tide you over and there are strats you can use to limit problems.

 

Using an FPS cap when using a FAST GPU will leave some CPU cycles for Gaming.

Aka CPU GPU good for 60-120fps but drops at random.. So Limit to 65fps, crank details up, enjoy a consistent 65fps with minor drops you may or may not notice... Then upgrade the CPU, unlock fps, and enjoy.

 

Or go with CPU, enjoy overheads, unlock FPS, enjoy higher minimums on current GPU, and upgrade accordingly afterwards..

 

Could go either way..

Nice may just go with a new cpu gpu combo i honestly wanted an i7 but got a really good deal on the i5 mobo and 16gb of ram i couldnt pass it up but i will take both in consideration thanks again

I'll guess your PSU is a seasonic s12ii/m12ii/EVO 620W, consider replacing it as all 3 models are horribly outdated with a decade+ old design.

Also maybe think about increasing the voltage to between 1.2-1.3v and cranking up the clock speed to 4.4-4.6ghz depending on silicon lottery. There's a lot of performance to be wasted by just keeping it at the turbo boost of 4.0ghz.

yeah i am new to OC but have been watching and reading about it and it really dosent seem to hard to do just scared i guess lol

If your budget allows it, I would get a 2070 or 2080, and then upgrade the rest of your system later.

Only problem with that is i just bought the system i have and like it just need to get  a better GPU for now and then later on i will do a whole new build with more up to date components

Well consider this... One day you will upgrade your mobo cpu and ram and then you will kick yourself for not buying the 1070 now.  Your video card would be set, all you have to upgrade if you like to is the cpu.  Sure it wont give the full fps you can get with a more powerful CPU, but just think of it as future investment.  You will enjoy it with your current setup and one day if you want, all you have to upgrade is mobo cpu and ram and your set,, You will have even a greater gaming experience and what not.

I have oc'ed both a 4690k 4790k and 4770k. They all were pretty easy to hit 4.4ghz. 4.6+ is where it started to get more technical. Also the devils canyon models both handled 4.6 with ddr3 2400mhz cl10 memory. I believe their memory controllers were good. The 4770k was not good with higher memory clocks.

+1 to Haswell Refresh IMC being good.

Had pushed CPU OC to 4.8Ghz (4.6 Daily) and (2x8+2x4 DDR3) 24GB of 2400Mhz still dual channel, operates at a 2600Mhz OC with looser timings.

 

In this case.. Seriously.. It just Works.
