2 users 1 big mean machine

Go to solution Solved by LukeSavenije,

My wife and I want to build a shared workstation.

Usually our projects are not that demanding for a mid range pc, but sometimes it comes to when she needs to edit a 4k video or I need to make a 3d video render.

We think that it would be a good idea to have one pc that can do either of those without an issue, but we can also share (at the same time) when doing less demanding work.

Can 2 people use the same pc at the same time?

How powerfull would it need to be?

budget?

Normally though its cheaper and easier to build 2 system instead of 1. Less software to mess with, and things like usb is plug and play and trouble shooting is much easier, esp if you haven't used linux before.

When sharing it would be basic 2d CAD, or Microsoft office, excel, project, ppt...

Maybe some Photoshop or InDesign

not my question. we know it needs at least a good cpu and gpu for 3d editing/4k editing

but what is that other workload?

btw, quote me if you want answers faster

so mostly 3d cad and adobe suite?

maybe a 2600, a rx580 and another cheap 610 or something for the second vm? or just running both off the 580 will do too

Then id just get 2 750 dollar systems.

Something like a r5 2600, rx570 system should work fine here, just get 2 of them. Or for those basic tasks, id be tempted to get a laptop.

It would be 2D CAD, office word, ppt, project, excel, not really that demanding

We were thinking about a Quadro, or is it actually not that good

What programs are you using?

For 2d cad, a quadro is overkill, and a igpu should be fine for what you listed here.

is a option, but quadros are for really heavy 3d cad or other usecases that require more vram/have huge differences with quadro/firepro drivers.

Will any virtual machine work? Or do you recomend a specific one?

If you want a seprate user with keyboard and mice and monitor, this won't do what you want.

Really, get 2 systems, it will be much easier, esp if you don't know much about vms and linux.

yeah... it's a bit more complicated than that... you could also get one cheap system and one heftier one for heavy use.

For 2d cad shure, but sometimes I work on a revit model of rather large buildings, and she works on film making, so we feel like at those moments we need the extra power

A quadro still seems overkill, and out of reach with that budget. Id get something like a rx 570, probably fine for those apps and much cheaper than a quadro.

580 is just a bit more and a nice increase in performence...

2200g or even a 220ge would be more than enough

What about a quadro p1000, or a p620? Its almost twice the price on the 1000 and the same on the 620

adobe apps  don't care about quadros(unless you need the 3d connector or extra vram or 10bit)

revit will be a bit faster on the quadro, but slower in other apps, and they cost more. I would get a rx 570 and return it if its too slow, but it should be fine.

Thank you again

As a side note...

I thought that an intel + nvidia was the way to go, why would amd be a better option here?
