First Build Tips

This is going to be my first build and setup, just trying to play 1080p at 144hz with g sync as well. If anyone has tips of what I should change and why or if it's perfect, let me know! I appreciate the feedback, thank you.

What's on your mind when you pick these parts, e.g. for looks, for brand loyalty, for speed etc?

 

Definitely throwing the 1080p 180Hz gsync monitor out though, Nvidia's opening support of adaptive sync on Freesync monitor with their newest drivers (already available for download) so going for Gsync, right now, is pointless.

Well, everything there is not half bad, but I wouldn't get a 1070 right now, the RTX 2060 is out and it is a better card and cheaper. Definitely go that route.

 

Also, its hard to wait on CPU's, but the new AMD Ryzen 3000 has been announced and it looks to be pretty amazing, but its at least half a year away so that is pretty unrealistic.

 

Also, I worry a little that the Ryzen 2600x will be a bit of a bottleneck for a 2060, but realistically a slight overclock would help things. Maybe with the ~70 bucks you save on the 2060 vs 1070 you can step up the CPU.

 

O, I see there is a 65 dollar rebate on the 1070, still tho, get a 2060. Ends up being about the same price.

This is true, but I had a freesync monitor back with my r9 290, and unless it has improved A LOT, gsync is a solid step up. Its noticeable... End to end hardware control does have an impact on the experience. Its not cheap, but imo its worth it if you can do it. At least from my experience.

No, obviously the quality of picture is extremely different. The x34 is a much better quality display. My freesync monitor was a TN panel vs the x34's IPS, so that *should* be a leg up for the freesync panel. it was an Acer XG270HU. So, yes, its no x34, but the smoothness was not nearly as smooth. It was better than nothing for sure, but this was perceivable better.

 

O, and this is 100 hz vs its 144, but, honestly, that isn't that big a deal. I have a Predator XB271HU on my secondary PC, and its 165 hz, and I take the x34 over that every day... Gsync is such a great hardware crutch, 100 hz is fine. Sure, 165hz 3440x1440 would be fantastic, but that high framerate vs 100 is much less important than gsync to me.

I mean, by replacing the monitor in OP's list to a 1080p 144Hz VA Freesync monitor can net $250 extra budget. A little more skimming on something else means a much faster graphics card. That's what I think is more important.

That's a great build, i would add more to the HDD to 3tb at least, but hey you can add later.

also it is not advisable to buy 1070 now when 2060 is only $350.

A 2060 is plenty powerful for the resolution he is targeting. If anything, faster CPU would be more optimal.

 

But, I would advise the OP do some YouTube and googling. Compare the difference between freesync and Gsync, and try and determine that on your own. It’s hard to know without seeing them in person, but they are both great technologies.

I doubt. not for AAA games with higher graphics settings while still hitting the max refresh rate anyway

No reason to hit the max with an adaptive sync setup, freesync of Gsync. The entire purpose is to let the FPS float between “high enough to feel smooth” and “not above max”. If you go over the max refresh rate, the adaptive refresh turns off. Nvidia has an option in the driver called fast sync to handle this, easiest to just google it. But with such technologies there is no reason to hit the max FPS anyways. Anything over 100 will look butter smooth. Hell, even down to 70’s it’s 100% fine.

 

But, plus, OP plans on 1080p, a 2060 will smash 1080p. My gtx 1070 in my second PC does just fine sitting mostly over 90-100 FPS dips on my 2560x1440 XB271HU, and a 2060 is faster, and 1080p is 2 million pixels vs 3.7 million; it’s much easier to drive then 2560x1440.

 

Check out gamers nexus for good comparison charts, they do some of the best these days. And they have rtx 2060 data.

yes, some games at uber max settings dip a bit, but that’s why you are paying for adaptive refresh. Lean on that tech to make a nice smooth gaming experience. No need to run at 165 FPS constantly. Try and stay above 60-70, and beyond that, just enjoy the gaming experience :)

I play the most demanding of games and GTX 1070 is only good for 70fps in those games no matter what :P. I even tried using the same card on a 8600k system, didnt do any better. RTX 2060 is faster, but I dont think that will do 100fps in my game library

$1500~1800 with a cheaper monitors people suggested is really high for " first build"...

 note that you pick alot of premium brands on mobo, case, nvme ssd, mouse & keyboards.... this gives no performance gain....try make it around $1200~~

I just tried to save a penny here and there. If you want to spend what you planed on the display you might want to go 1440p freesync from the gsync compatibil list for around the same price but better value. 

 

I removed the ryzen X tax and added a decent cooler (+- the same money, just how I would do it) and you can manually overclock to the 2600x performance without any problem. 

I took the wifi mb because it was only 6 $ more than the same without. You can remove it but sometimes it is handy to have wifi. I also would have removed the additional case fan but damn, 6.99 $ is a great deal on a full rgb fan. 

 

Slightly slower ssd for 6 $ less and double capacity.

At what res? I have a 1070 that boosts itself to just under 2000 core, and at 2560x1440 I have no issues playing new AAA games. Up until a couple weeks ago it was on a 4.6ghz 3770k with 1333 RAM, now it’s on a 5ghz 8700k. Even with the 3770k it did fine, except BF V would dip down into the 60’s, and that was on high settings. CPU just couldn’t keep up, GPU usage was in the 60-70% range. With the 8700k, even BF V on high/ultra is well into the 90’s, and this is 1440p vs 1080p... a 2060 @ 1080p I have to assume would get at least 30 more FPS...

1080p. Try ubisoft games, they ruin your frame rates

O, I see there is a 65 dollar rebate on the 1070, still tho, get a 2060. Ends up being about the same price.

If the op is fine with rebates you can get a Gigabyte GTX 1070 for $299.99 from Newegg. The RTX 2060 seems to be around $349.99 on pcpartpicker. 

 

Sure the 1070 isn't quite as fast but it will be fine for 1080p. Depends if the op wants to squeeze every last $$$ out of the build.

Bad code is bad lol. Not much you can do about it. Sometimes you can overcome crap code with raw CPU power, but there is a limit. If the engine is garbage, you can run any GPU you want and it won’t perform well :/

Hmm, I’m not sure. I just don’t keep up with how Ryzen stacks up as much as I do with intel. I’m not the right person to have good info for that unfortunately. I wouldn’t know more than just looking up benchmarks on google.
