Sell my 1080?

I can sell my GTX 1080 for around the price I bought it for, $480. Should I sell it and buy a 2060? Or another card?

2060 performs around a 1070, so no. I'd keep the 1080 for now.

sell it, you can actually get a 2070 for 499

I would sell it and get a 2080. Unless you are jumping in performance by a good amount it doesn't make sense to switch.

A 2080 is definitely out of my range, however the advantage of a 2070 would be RTX, DLSS, AI as well as I would expect these cards to retain value for longer.

I'm holding onto mine until 3000 series, you just wont get much of a performance increase unless you are willing to drop $1200 on a 2080ti.

 

At best you'd be gaining RTX which is only in like 2 games, and you wouldn't really want to run it in BFV with the performance hit affecting MP competitiveness.

They are referring to nvidias next generation of gpus. Obviously they just released the 2000 series so it will be a while before they release another gen of gpus. I would suspect 2020 based on the rumors of their 7nm gpus.

i think they are supposed to release GTX 1180 soon which should basically be from what i understand an RTX2080 core but with RT cores and tensor cores disabled (no ray tracing/DLSS) it should also be a cheaper card to buy.

As Brooksie said, the next generation cards from Nvidia, most likely in 2020 on Samsung's 7nm process.

 

The issue with RTX as a 1080 owner is that only the 2080 and 2080ti are real improvements and that is $800 or $1200, and the $800 upgrade is not even that great, its like having just traded in the 1080 for a 1080 ti. So unless you go all out on the 2080ti, to have the power to push 4k right now, I don't see the point. The RTX generation is not a real improvement on the 10 series cards in performance per dollar, so unless you spend quite a bit more you don't get much more. So that is why I am waiting until the next generation because hopefully at least then I can get a 100% upgrade over my 1080 without having to spend 200% what I did on the 1080!

If you can switch to 2070 without losing more than $20-30, then it's a good way to go. The total cost of ownership will be higher with your current 1080 as it depreciates over time.

 

Also, keep in mind that the RTX cards are very software-dependent to increase the performance gap with the 10-series. As time goes, I expect them to pull away with AI-augmented performance. DLSS is just a start.

Radeon VII is the reason why they need something to undercut the price of the AMD competition...if they can release this card we're talking about for 599$ they will sell a crap ton of them and the radeon will stay on the shelf.

I think you don't understand how much it would cost to create a new die for a product like 1180. As it stands the 2080 should be plenty competitive with the Radeon 7. They are pushing raytracing and dlss really hard and to release an 1180 would undermine all that. There is 0 chance they will release a 1180. They may release a 1150 because it makes sense but not at the high end. Also bear in mind there wasn't even rumors of a 1180 but rather an 1160.

If the rt and tensor cores are broken then the gpu itself is likely nonfunctional as well. They won't have enough dies that have a completely working 2080 die with just the tensor and rt cores busted.

You can do that but it isn't gonna happen. I was right when I said back in May that the next gen gpus won't be the significant jump in performance that Pascal was and I am right now.
