What's your size of your media library and how to you organize it?

lets have a talk about how big our media library is!

(what i mean is how big is the size of the folder that holds all of your movies, tv shows, and other consumable media that you own and have collected) (legitimately or illegitimately, don't post how or where you got it because i will report it to the mods and will have the post deleted)

even then you may delete things you may not like anymore and may want to share how you do this process.

so anyways!, my current size of my media library is 904 GB (yes that includes the h-word of anime, i have it separate from my other folders for organization reasons) and i am current adding 58.06 GB of tv shows i ripped myself so it will expand to 962.06 GB aprox.

i organize mine with plex on my windows server 2012 R2 server that i got for $20 AUD at a garage sale (use to have windows server 2008 and doesn't officially support 2012 but i don't really care)

it's media storage drive (where i store my library) is 1.8 TB my using a 1TB hdd added together in windows with a raid 0 volume of a 200 GB and 500 GB hdd

(not the safest option but i don't have much money and i had these lying around so i used them to expand my media library storage)

i back it up onto my desktop with it's 3TB hdd and a 2TB external hdd that i bought just in case something went wrong with both my server and desktop if i lost my media library on both

i don't delete my media since i also do this as a backup for my dvd's i have bought over the years as a back up of them.

plex stores it's metadata on a 500GB raid 0 volume of two 250 GB hdds and it uses a 4GB ram disk for transcode storage to help speed up transcode jobs when i am out and about on a mobile device and about or using a device that doesn't support the media format i have the file in (basically most of them since i use .mkv for my files since it allows my to store my subtitles and multiple audios streams (directors commentary and normal audio from the film) in one file, making my media folder less cluttered)

i also download theme songs for some tv shows since some are bad or don't come with any on plex and i have to manually add them since i like the theme song playing while i am picking a episode to watch, i do this with the local media asset agent which i have enabled

plex has library of my tv shows and movies but not my h-word anime because plex doesn't recognized them correctly and some doesn't get recognized at all even though i have prepared them correctly for plex's library scanner (i believe this is because some of them have Japanese symbols in them causing the scanner to ignore them, i can't be bothered to fix them though)

and no i don't want help with it, it's not really an issue for me as it doesn't matter

 

anyways thats how i organised my library and how plex is configured (not really a setup post since i don't really explain how my server is configured and what it's specs are, i could do a post explaining that some other time)

I have 4TBs of ripped blu rays. My PC case is so big I just bought a mini itx mobo and was able to fit it inside. So I always have my plex server properly cooled and with me

    • If it is a series, then each series gets a sub folder and each season gets a sub folder. Movies are all dumped into their respective folders. Music all dumped into the "music" folder. Filebot used to name everything.
    • Movies has 1 subfolder called "Optimized" where I pre-transocde more recent movies to reduce the need to transcode.
  • Non-reproducable data backed up to a separate 9TB array, very "dear" files backed up to AWS (family photos, personal documents)

Also Plex uses specific websites to reference (imdb / tvdb) file names to get information. However you are free to manually do it - just hitup a site that sells the DVD of whatever you want, download the album art and copy/paste the synopsis.

Plex/Empy rely on MPC-HC correct? I see nothing wrong with creating your own solution to fit your needs, gives you more control. Certainly less pissed off when there are big changes you don't like lol (since there aren't any).

 

If you've got some stuff you want backed up offsite, rclone (encrypted) + AWS ain't a bad way to go. I have about 100gb sitting on AWS (includes config backups) and I think I'm paying less than a $1/m.

i know plex can do this but it didn't come to me when i was expanding plex... and it spilts up my media libary, which would make it annoying for me when i want to add new media since i have to remember what drive i have to put it on and even worse if i run out of space on one i would have to move the data to another drive then tell plex where the moved data is.  too much work for me because i am lazy (very lazy)

i have been trying to make it a habit so i don't lose my media, hell i have no idea how many disks i have ripped but i know to redo it all would take me over 3 months... like hell i'm doing that!

actually transcoding to a psychical disk EXTREMELY hurts it's life span since it's reading and writing a lot of data, a user called Byte My Bits (link) did this with a brand new ssd and it died within a month, with the hdds i have, this would be a very good way to kill them,

plus the reason i did this is because it allows faster switching between multiple quality's very quickly, very useful if i am on my mobile device since it will just switch to the lower quality transcoded one when i have less speed on my mobile internet

and transcoding to a ramdisk is a bit faster (not much at all but every bit helps) and doesn't wear out the ram sticks (as far as i know, i don't think memory can wear out...)

didn't say what my system model and/or the manufacturer is, nor the CPU model nor the ram size... nor how it's connected to my network... that more really defines it as a setup post...

There's probably a few dozen or so TB of stuff, almost ALL of it badly disorganized. :o

A lot of it is named variations of MVI_6144.mov, and a few maybe also file0028.chk.  Much of it is self-produced, or produced by my church friends and not available in any stores, online or physical.

 

Also, pretty much *none* of it is backed up. :/ (Except what was converted from tapes, etc - we still have most of those tapes.)

Haven't been able to figure out a way to back it up for a fraction of the price (like 10-20% or so) of buying the equivalent capacity of 5400rpm shingled HDDs. (If I build a dual Xeon LGA771/1366/2011 server I absolutely do *NOT* want rackmount!)

Backing up to cloud wouldn't work either, as I have only up to 10 Mbps up with a 1 TB per month cap.  No one offers uncapped gigabit up/down plans where I live now, and I hope to move to maybe a less densely populated area sometime next year.

 

Also if I resume recording more video, my camera records 4K at 100 Mbps - about 4 GB per just under 6 minutes, or about 41 GB per hour of footage.  That can add up really quick. (Don't really want to blow a lot of dinero on drives for a while.)

I made the switch from Windows 10 Storage Spaces to UnRAID after losing 3.5TB of files because Storage Spaces and Event Viewer convinced me to remove the wrong drive from the array (removing the parity protection, and then the failing disk corrupting everything from there).

 

Storage Spaces is known to suck at write speeds on parity arrays, UnRAID has given me at least 3 times the speed, and that's without using an SSD cache. Personally I'm not using the cache as the only spare SSD I have lying around is only 40GB. It also means I can save some money on buying the UnRAID licence when my trial runs out as I won't need as many storage devices.
