I've been looking to upgrade both my 60hz 4ms monitors to 144hz 1ms and I came across a VA panel Monitor I thought would fit my setup perfectly. I'm not a highly competitive player but I do like to try and be the best I can while the game looks nice (I mostly play FPS and other random games) but VA monitors seem to get a lot of shit when compared to TN or IPS so I was wondering are they really as bad as everyone makes out and is it a huge difference or just minor ones for someone who doesn't know alot about displays.

VA only has viewing angle issues, but they're not as bad as TN. However they have much higher contrast ratios than IPS panels. So if you like to play your PC games in the dark, VA panels would be preferable.

EDIT: VA panels are also noted for their worse response times, but gaming oriented ones have fixed that (http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/aoc_agon_ag322qc4.htm)

In my opinion, VA is the best gaming monitor for price, looks, etc. They're tweakable just like the others, and can be made to look fantastic, just like the others.

VA is fine, even TN panels have improved a lot.

You really need to go see it in person to compare though.

I was just recently researching VA-panels and it seems that they fit right in the middle of TN- and IPS-panels: they've got slightly worse response-times than TN, but better than IPS, and they've got better viewing-angles than TN, but worse than IPS. Personally, I prefer the higher contrast-ratio of VA-panels over IPS-panels' better colours, so I'm planning to buy a VA-panel display one day in the future, once I find someone to buy my kidneys.

Response times do not matter. Don't fall into the pcmasterrace myths.

Response time is measured as how long a single pixel takes to change from one shade of grey to another shade of grey. In practical applications, when pixels aren't always changing just shades, the response time is much, much longer.

Also, manufacturers don't bother to measure response times correctly because they know the same people who think response times defines whether a good monitor or not also think that manufacturers actually take the time and precisely measure the number of milliseconds it takes for one pixel to change from one shade of grey to another shade of grey.

The one I'm going for is advertised as 1ms so they can't really lie.. right? it's not from some fake ass brand either

Manufacturers always lie.

TL;DR response time is about as important for judging the quality of a monitor as PB&J sandwiches are racist.

1 ms, 4 ms, 5 ms.… it's all the same for you, you won't notice it if you played on different monitors with different times.  It's like saying you can tell a car going 0-60 in 4.1s vs 4.2s.

IGNORE  advertised resposne time.

There is NO industry wide method for testing resposne time or the specific results they should advertise

What u need to do is use it as a guide only, then check actual reviewers who test response time the same way across all their tests. This gives a fair comparison betwen all manufactuers monitors they have tested.

Most reviewers who test for it will show 80% and 100% average times, both up and down. That i mean 0 to 80% repsonse time, 80-100% response time, and back down again. 80 to 0 % and 100 to 80%. They should also have a bunch of other results including 0-100% , 0-20 ..and  back down etc etc

Resposne times for the best TN, IPS, and VA panels beleve it or not are very similar, but those small variances can make a difference.

TN is the fastest, both VA and IPS are very close to each other.

The long and short of it is that VA will stil 'ghost' more than the othe 2 types, but all LCD monitors ghost by some amount.

Reponse times for LCD monitors , even TN, just cannot get fast enough to remove ghosting entirly. Whether u notice it or not is down to the individual.

Me personaly, im used to CRT and Plasma screens which have instant response, so even with a fast TN panel i notice small amounts of ghosting particularly in dark images.

in the end. VA is 'not as bad as they say'. Infact i would say its the least worst option out of the 3. Contrast and black levels account significantly to image quality and VA beats out TN and IPS in that regard.

If u find a VA panel monitor u liek the look of, find a review that tests response time and compare it against others the reviewer has.

Rtings for example, while it doesnth ave a huge library of monitor reviews, sicne it started as a TV reviewer, has enough on their to get an idea of what u want to look for. IMO you want ot find a VA panel that has a 80% resposne time of ~5ms and a 100% resposne time of ~10ms. Thats pritty much the best your gunna get.

EDIT: The fastest TN panel monitor rtings has testest so far has a 80% resposne time of 2.4ms and a 100% time of 4ms. Thats a far cry form the manufacuters specs of 1ms.
