I know a lot of people who buy 780's because it's the cool thing to do (kidding sort of). I'm wondering if it's really needed for someone who plays games on one 60Hz monitor. Are there any games that it's really needed for? Or any other uses where it's a good idea?

I was thinking about getting one myself, but I didn't know if it was really worth it for me. Any replies are great, thanks. :D

Is it a little overkill, possibly but come on :) overkill is underrated mate (apart from when it comes to PSU's).

780 is pretty darn beastly it'll play most if not all current games that are currently out.

For 1440p, yes it's needed. I was also an early adopter of the 780; I got mine the 2nd day it came out. My second 780 came much later however.

It might be overkill now, but what about in 2 or 3 years? It will last longer than the best bang for the buck gpu you can buy now...

I was going to say this as well. If you don't upgrade often, it's usually best to get the best card you can afford.

Especially if you want to play upcoming games like Star Citizen at high settings.

if you have a 1080p display buy a GTX 760/770 or a R9 270x/280 or something like that. If you don't need the extra power for a higher resolution display, or if you really really need to play every game on max settings buy a GTX780. But the smart way is to buy a GTX 760 or even a GTX770/R9280X and something new when the card gets to slow. Futureproofing is especially with GPUs pointless, just buy what you need.

You know, I'd gotten a SilverStone OP1000 back in 2007, just before getting a pair of HD2900XT's. You can't imagine the shock many fellow forum members had expressed back then when I'd told them of my purchase. Some teased me, others derided my decision. I knew a pair of HD2900XT's were gonna suck a lot of juice, plus my OC'ed X9650 @3.9ghz and other devices, so I opted for a PSU that would handle them, and new upgrades with ease. I later moved on to a pair of HD3870 X2's and the PSU handled them easily as well. My point is, if the PSU is good and packs a lot of juice, it can last for years and see you thru several upgrades. Heck, last time I'd stress it was when I had it powering a HD6990 + MSI HD6970 Lightning a few months back. Right now, that very same OP1000 I'd gotten years back is in semi-retirement mode powering the very same X9650 + HD7970 rig (my 3rd rig), yep, taking it easy on the old boy. They don't make PSU's like this anymore....

How can anyone call any consumer-grade gpu an overkill for 1080p when even 780ti can't keep constant 60fps in the killer games (BF4 due to poor optimisation; Metro LL; Witcher 2 on ubersampling) star citizen, witcher 3 and such coming soon. If you can, get 780.

Why do you wish you had gotten the 780?

780ti can't max out most games even with my specs though. Before my ti I also had the non ti version and it struggled with arma 3 and crysis 3. I can't even put out max video settings (not counting AA and stuff). Many games won't run smooth too at the absolute max including but not limited to : Metro Last light, Batman series, Boderlands 2, LA noire, tomb raider.

So no, its not overkill, but you'll still be top of the line.
