9900K cooling?

Hi guys,

 

I installed 9900K recently into my HAF X case and used my almost working NZXT X61 AIO. I need to change my cooler as my temps are really high on idle. I kept on searching for a CPU cooler and ended up with below options.

 

• Cooler Master ML360R
• Corsair H150i
• NZXT X72
• Noctua NH-D15

However I want to know if they are capable of cooling an overclocked 9900K? while keeping the temps and noise low?

 

In the "Caffeine-Fueled Midnight PC Building Stream" I saw linus cooling the 9900K with Noctua nh-u12s is it sufficient?

 

new suggestions are welcomed as well

 

Edit 1: I received a reply from CM about their ML360R, saying "Hi 9900K is one of the hottest chip when OCed, according to some of the test data available online, it gets hot even with 360 mm radiator, and some test data when OCed has TDP getting close to the limit of our cooler"

I vote for the Corsair, but I'm curious as to why you think your current cooler is "barely working". Do you mean it isn't functioning properly or it just isn't good enough? What kind of temps are you seeing at load and idle? The 9900k runs pretty damn hot (like most Intel's) so if you're seeing high temps compared to an older CPU that may be why.

From what I have heard from reviewers videos they recommended at least a 280mm liquid cooler but I don't remember if that was overclocked or with the motherboards default setting to have MCE enabled.

They all are quite capable and well-performing coolers. Air coolers are usually slightly more quiet (no pump noise), but have ever so slightly higher temps (I went from H110i GT to NH-D15 when I still had a PC).

 

Temps depend on how far you push it (and how well binned the CPU is).

Noise depends on how much you can tolerate while keeping great temps.

Basically it makes allot of pump noises, which is a well known issue for the X61. as for temps I'm getting 50c for writing this reply only. No other tabs or apps are open.

How recently was the install? It may take a day or two for the thermal paste to "cure" and become effective. You may also want to re-seat your cooler and see if that resolves it.

 

If not, get the Corsair H150i. It's the best AIO water cooler on the market.

NZXT and Corsair are your best bet. Cooler Master AIOs are relatively low quality and don’t cool that well, and an NH-D15 is somewhere around a 240mm AIO in terms of cooling performance, maybe a 280 on a good day.

Remember, the coolers you have listed should be a bit overkill if you’re not overclocking. I’m sure the NH-U12S is fine for stock speeds (might still be warm but not overly so).

I wouldn't even think about air cooling a 9900k. Got a 420mm rad for mine and am still hitting spike thermal limitations

Stock or OC? And at what frequency?

Well, the 9900k is the top of the consumer line of unlocked chips. 99% of builds with one will be intending to overclock.

 

Even at stock I wouldn't personally feel comfortable pushing it on air.
