I don't know if there is already a thread on this. Right now it is all steam machine this steam machine that. From my understanding the SteamOS needs to be more desktop friendly rather than console-tv friendly before valve even expects people to use it.

This topic comes up because my friend bought a new laptop with windows 8 on it. I've heard terrible things about Windows 8, but i've never had the chance to use it until just the other day. I can say Windows 8 is shitty. MACos I learned to use in about 10 minutes. Windows 8 it took me atleast an hour to even figure how to use. My friend wants Windows 8 off of his laptop and he wants to put Windows 7 on it.

Will SteamOS be the new standard operating system for gaming and for pc's in general?

Let the debate commence!

For gaming maybe but you can still do more with a windows machine. That's what will keep it going, it can be used for much more than gaming.

I think they over thought things when they developed windows 8 thinking they could move the consumer base users to touch screen devices. Seemed like a good idea to sell surface tablets. But what about the users who prefer Mouse&Keyboard, windows 8 sucks. I think only 10% of the people that come in the shop I work at look at touch screens. The others go right for the stuff with a mouse and keyboard or a laptop. If they do by chance want a touch screen device they don't want it to be desktop because they cant bring it anywhere.

SteamOS will not replace Windows. Windows 8(.1) is vastly superior to Windows 7 and if you could just take all of those negative things you've heard about it and throw those away you and your friend could enjoy it much easier. Use Start8 or similar to get rid of Metro and you have a much faster system than it would've been with Windows 7. How it could take you more than an hour to learn how to use Windows 8 is beyond my imagination, even with Metro UI it is pretty much exactly the same as Windows 7...

I disagree with the entire Original Post.

Windows 8 isn't that much different then windows 7 in fact it's extremely better the only cosmetic difference is that it has a different start menu and no start icon in the toolbar. But if you upgrade to 8.1 it gives you a start icon and download startisback and your problems are solved, the only other difference really is that instead of 'computer' it says 'this PC'

As for Steam OS being more 'desktop friendly' I disagree with as well, I think Steam OS is great for PC gamers, who use their PC for mostly games and only little internet surfing. Using it for anything else is like getting an xbox just for Netflix and having no intention at all to play games on it. The only thing I personally think Steam OS needs to make it better is having more games for it to play.. but again that's not steams fault.

Without looking at anyone else’s response I can truly say that I just think even though Steam is a major part, the heart of PC gaming I just feel that though the OS will be undoubtedly popular it just won't suit the needs of people outside of gaming.

(Please take in to consideration that I have not looked in to SteamOS a great deal so my views are based off from what I have heard not seen)

FYI, there is a desktop mode and it's already been modified to install packages from Debian repositories.

Their goal is to promote a completely open platform for Gaming. Locking users out of a Desktop mode (which they've certainly haven't done) goes against that completely.

Maybe it will, maybe it won't. I don't think one can tell right now.

I don't like Windows 8 at all. Two installs and they are clunky, slow crashing wastes that makes it difficult for me to install my programs. Maybe I'm extremely unlucky and just continuously get the bad stuff.

I use SteamOS beta right now and this is not true at all. There is an option in the settings that can allow you to switch over to the desktop, which they actually make you use to install Steam in the first place. There is even a shortcut key to pres to switch between Steam and the desktop.

I just hope that there will be better drivers for Linux. But debian won't take over on windows.

I think that a manufacturer like Gigabyte making a steam machine is one of the best things that happened for Tux the Penguin, it's the 2nd worldwide mobo manufacturer behind asus.

When steamOS enables in home streaming.. You can turn an old crappy PC into an extender. Run a game on your powerful PC and it streams to the crappy one running steamOS. Wah La! You don't need to buy 2 powerful PCs. As for win8.. Get StartIsBack and use desktop mode.. Boom win7 again.

Future is looking good.. Patience.

You can already stream a video signal on a lan by buying dedicated modules that are alot more cheaper than Pc's, if you are willing to stay on windows 7/8 or use a pc just for streaming, what's the point?
