Having issues hitting 100% usage on 8600k when streaming

FrizL

I listed my specs below but I am running an 8600k with an ASUS 1070. When I play pubg and stream (using OBS), I noticed that my cpu goes to 100% usage in Task Manager. But mostly I can tell the difference when playing. FPS still shows 100ish at 1080p but it is not smooth at all. Any help or ideas would be great.

CPU - i5 8600k overclocked to 4.6

GPU - Asus ROG GTX 1070

MB - Asus z370-E

RAM - 16 GB of 3200mhz T-Force nighhawk

Hdd - 2x Samsung Evo 970

You need an i7, 6 cores and no HT means streaming is eating up your whole CPU, and if you want a high quality stream, it leaves little CPU resources for gaming.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

You should enable your iGPU on the BIOS and stream using QuickSync.

Streaming requires the CPU to encode what you're capturing to whatever codec you're using for the video stream. So this is expected. If you don't care about absolute quality (likely you're using x264 as the encoder), have OBS use QuickSync or NVENC to offload the encoding work to something else.

As i5 8600k owner at 4,8GHz daily overclock, I can just say that I'm waiting for Ryzen 3xxx series.

If new Ryzen can achieve 200cb score in cinebench single core performance, I'm going with 12c/24 chip for sure.

In my case, just playing a game will get my CPU to 85% most of the time.

It does have 6 very strong cores, but games can be demanding. Can't imagine also putting stress of encoding and streaming on my CPU while I'm gaming.

Thanks for those ideas... going to try to dial all that in as I think the raw power even without HT should be able to complete two tasks. then if all else fails... I enjoy having an excuse to rebuild.

Thanks, man. Glad to hear we are in the same boat and its not a lottery. Kinda had this as a worry when I got my 8600 but hadn't tried to stream until recently.

Well I kinda knew from the start that this CPU isn't meant for playing and streaming, and to be honest it's fine for me, since I'm not into streaming at all.

Games work great with this CPU, but it does get to 85% usage pretty fast.

If Zen3 will be as great as everyone is hoping it to be, I will switch for sure. Otherwise I will just stay with my 8600k for another year :)

i couldn't even game without stuttering on a 8600k, add streaming to that....

you can easily switch to a 8700/k, or update the bios for 9900k, prices have dropped.
