Processor upgrade

I would like to get a better processor for my build but i'm not sure what will affect my gaming performance. My budget is $200-$250 and i would like a 7th Gen Core I5. I was looking a the I5-7400. What would affect games? Core count or # of threads? Recommendations greatly appreciated.

 

 

Edit: I have a I3-7100@ 3.9 GHz and a EVGA 1050ti

Im staying with team blue.

im looking at it and i could get a I5-9600. I would have to get a better Mobo but i would be fine with that.

Core count and the number of threads are linked. If your CPU has hyperthreading, the number of threads will be double of your number of cores.

Gaming mostly benefits from single core performance.

 

With that said, what motherboard do you currently have? Are you comfortable buying used?

I have  a ASRock H270 pro. I prefer not to buy new but i will if there's no other option

Good luck finding a board and CPU for $250. The CPU alone costs that much, and add another $120-150 for a Z370/Z390 board in case of the 9600K.

Why does everyone want to go for an i7? Sure it's nice for bragging rights, but if you're purely gaming on your machine, your cores will sit there idling. An i5 is perfectly fine and a lot cheaper in most cases

wait for the new ryzen stuff thats coming at CES 2019 in january less than a month away. its said that we could see 16 cores 32 threads at 5ghz for 499$ and also 8 cores 16 threads for 299$ at 5.2ghz and being a month away its worth the wait as it will be on 7nm and you could save up for that nice 16 core monster

If OP wants to spend money he should at least spend to something that will last and makes sense and not a 4c/4t in early 2019, when he'll pay still a hefty price tag on a Kaby Lake i5 but not do a meaningful jump in performance.

 

A shit ton of games will be CPU bond with only 4 threads, specially if he expects to have background and side ground applications going on.

for the purchase to be worth it there needs to be noticeable gains, but that's not much on the quad core i5 compared to the 6 core i5s and Ryzen 5s.

4c/4t is a useless investment. More and more games start requiring around 6 threads at least to maintain a smooth experience. A CPU with4  threads is great for MS Office or kids games, but for AAA gaming, it's less than adequate.

I don't agree, six cores is usually overkill for games, especially since OP is probably running his at 1080p 60fps. There's not much point in getting a 6c/nt CPU with a 1050ti

Maybe OP wants a better GPU in the future. Good luck maxing out an RTX2070 with a puny 4t CPU in a game like BFV. Not happening.

I can play CS:GO, Fortnite, Unreal tournament league of legends and more on a dual-core and a 1050ti, 1080p medium-high settings at 60 FPS.

Well going from a 1050ti to a 2070 is quite the jump as well. The point I'm trying to make is, that at OPs price point an i5 is the best option.

 

I personally probably wouldn't even upgrade my CPU for the moment and rather get a bigger budget and buy both a CPU and GPU then

By then i would have upgraded to a 8th or 9th gen CPU. 4 cores are not bad with a 1070ti. that's probably what my next GPU is.
