SSDs are complicated,

I have a nearly full 1TB HDD and so I got myself a 500GB SSD because I heard theyre fast and stuff.

 

It took me an hour to figure out how to make this thing show up and work (shoutout to Crucial Community.) and now all these youtube vidoes keep talking about additional software, backups and all that, none of it makes any sense. Why would I need a backup, I just want to move stuff over like I would to a usb I just plugged in, whats the difficulty?

 

I just want to move Windows, chrome and maybe some games over to it so they run fast. Why cant I just move over all the files?

You can't really just move windows. Backup what you need and format the HDD and install windows on the SSD

SSD are simple, just gotta use them right. Fresh install windows onto the SSD and then move everything over. Everything you have is in your "user' folder.

 

You can't just "move windows" you have to install it onto the SSD.

Most cloning software will take the whole partition. If his PC was partitioned twice, once windows, once a second drive, then he could do this.

well. I'm that guy that used his one drive between 4 different systems and still has it working just fine. not that I would recommend it, but it is possible

To a person completely clueless how to use a SSD I have my doubts on whether his HDD is partitioned or not.

Yeah but cloning from an HDD to SDD is a bad idea in terms of performance on longevity on the lifespan of the SSD. Unless the cloning software is smart enough

More than likely, it's not. You can do this when you install windows but I doubt he did this. If he did, clone it with Macrium Reflect and call it a day.

 

If not, fresh install windows, grab what you want from your "user" folder, then use your HDD as storage.

The primary reasons you can't just CTRL + C on the HDD and CTRL + V on the SSD are:

  • You can't boot from a storage device without a bootloader, and normally this is hidden from the user once inside the OS.
  • There are hidden system files that the OS uses that even an administrator level account can't access without digging really deep
  • The bootloader must be in a very specific place on the storage drive. It's not simply a drive letter and the path, but the literal address in the storage device itself. I believe the bootloader is also looking for core OS files in a very specific manner as well. Copying and pasting does not guarantee the placement of this data

well. this is why. you can actually do this with personal files, but just not with windows itself, exept for some really good cloning software.

Dunno what a bootloader or partitions are but I know the word "part". Movies and cakes are split into parts, that makes sense. So from the little I know I should be somehow able to backup basically everything I have on my HDD like saving a good part of a cake, then format literally everything else (everything else being just windows) like throwing the bad part of the cake into garbage, bake a fresh new cake onto the SSD (install windows on it) and then somehow unpack the good old cake(the stuff on my hdd) and eat it still fresh (use it like nothing ever happened) without having to move a single file. Is this not how it works?

OP: I don't know what bare drives are, I don't understand how migration software works, and I don't understand why you cant just drag and drop.  Its TO COMPLICATED

I installed a bare drive SSD into the wifes system this weekend.  I knew what I was doing so was off to the races about 2 minutes after physical installation...not complicated at all.

Just for the record, your issue is not unique to SSDs. This is true if you're moving to any new storage device that you want to put your current copy of C:\ onto.

 

When people say "backing up," they're talking about your personal data. These are the data usually found in C:\Users\[username]. As @LukeSavenije said, you can literally copy this data to another storage device, then paste it back in the same location on the new storage device once you have Windows setup on it in some form or fashion.

 

If you don't have an extra storage device to spare, then either you use cloning software to copy everything to the SSD bit-by-bit, or you install Windows on the SSD, then copy your personal data over from the HDD to the SSD.

Well if partition is just a fancier way of saying part then my HDD is partitioned. In Disk Manager, the place I activated/initialized/made the SSD work in, It  shows that my HDD is indeed split into 4 parts, region1 is 100MB primary system or something, region2 is my (C:) and regions3 and 4 are 450MB each for backup if thats what you were talkin about. Ive never before even opened this computer management and I built the pc myself so I guess this was automatic.

But how would Windows work then? There would be 2 of them, I did go through the BIOS and it seems there is some way to change the boot order so that I boot from the SSD instead but how would the HDD be affected? Would I then have to format/wipe the HDD and then move stuff over back to it? Would that even work if there are these "phantom strings" connecting Windows with all the other files? My HDD seems to be partitioned with MBR and I partitioned my SSD into GPT because it seemed better so would the copying even work? I guess I could change it since theres nothing on it yet and it even appears as one part in the disk manager.

Install SSD.  Turn on PC and Format it as NTSF volume. Its likely a bare drive and wont even show up until you do this. Turn off PC.

Turn on PC and boot to bios.  THIS IS WHERE WE DIFFER (most likely) I set Bios to boot from USB, where my Win 10 ISO is - you will need to set it to boot from whatever media you are using.

Install Windows on the SSD and once you reboot make sure to set the SSD in BIOS as the primary boot drive.

Go into My PC and right click and select Manage - reformat your 1tb HDD to a fresh NTSF volume.

Yes, those were created automatically when you installed Windows. It's for reliability reasons.

When your computer boots, it looks for which storage drives have a bootloader. Then it boots up using the first storage drive it looks at with a bootloader, assuming the bootloader also says there's an OS on that drive. Having another installation of Windows does not affect any other ones you boot into unless you do it yourself. i.e., you have to actively make the installations dependent on each other for some reason.

 

There's an order set in BIOS/UEFI which devices to look at for a bootloader.

  1. Install Windows on the SSD
  2. Boot into the SSD (you may have to change the boot order in BIOS/UEFI)
  3. Configure Windows, install drivers and software, etc.
  4. If you have any personal data from the HDD (it would be in the Users\[useranme] folder), copy that over to the SSD
  5. Reformat the HDD when you've copied everything over

If the amount of personal data you have on the HDD exceeds what the SSD can hold, then this will take a bit more legwork if you don't have another storage drive you can use. And while you can just delete the contents of the HDD, there are still hidden system files that can be a pain in the butt to remove even though you're not using that installation of Windows.
