I7 8700k vs R7 2700x (AMD or INTEL?)

Boni

Hi,

I am about to upgrade my system, keeping only my GPU  - GTX 1070. I'm thinking AMD is cheaper but the INTEL seems to perform a bit better at gaming, which will be the main purpose of the PC.

----------------------------------------------------------------

It looks like this at the moment:
Motherboard: MSI x370 GAMING PRO CARBON
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 2700x
Cooling: BE QUIET Dark Rock 4
GPU: ASUS Strix GTX 1070 8GB
PSU: CORSAIR RM650X
Ram: G.SKILL AEGIS 3000mhz CL16 (2x8gb)
Case: FRACTAL DESIGN Meshify C
----------------------------------------------------------------

Is the i7 8700k worth the extra money for what it brings? At the moment I like the "cheaper" AMD more as I'd have more cores, so I could allocate a couple for streaming.

Thanks!

The 8700K is 8% faster than the 2700x. Personally, not a big enough difference for me to pay that much for the Intel chip, especially when the 2700x has more cores.

Thanks!

You get 6 cores with i7 as well. That will be enough for gaming and streaming. Choose according to your needs. If you want better gaming performance, i7 is better but Ryzen is better value.

2700x has 8 cores, which would make it better for gaming and streaming due to having more available processing power for encoding.

I'd get the 2700X if you are streaming as well because extra cores can help you out more on that front.

Intel's single-core performance is faster which is good for games but, I'd take a bit less FPS for 2 extra cores any day.

I'd recommend these videos if you need help with choosing a MOBO:

Intel:

AMD:

Agreed.

One of my buddies games and streams from a 2700x, he has no issues whatsoever.

Oh for sure, no arguments there. My point was it will be able to handle light streaming and will have good gaming performance. It depends on what OP's preferences are.

Every thing missing the fact OP is only buying a GTX 1070 and that's not really a powerful enough GPU to where the i7 8700K will give any meaningful advantage over the Ryzen 7 2700 so he can go AMD if it is any cheaper and don't plan on GPU upgrading in the next 3~ years which is about time to FINALLY have 7nm AMD CPUs and 10nm Intel CPUs.

I agree with @Princess Cadence.  With that 1070 he isn't gonna miss any frames other than in something like CSGO, but even then it won't be noticeable.

However, I would not get an X370 and a 2700X.  I would pair a 2700 with a X370 board, but you will be missing out on the best features of an X chip with an older X370.

Maybe next year I upgrade the GPU.

8700K better for gaming for sure, 2700X will have better multi-core performance and gaming is good just not great.  In the end it comes down to will you want to upgrade down the line?  Even with the rumor* of Intel extending 14nm to Comet Lake S, which BTW I think is fake news, the chip set has been milked out of all its potential.  Next gen Ryzen looks to surpass Intel on ever front while still supporting current gen motherboards.  So long game yeah I would get a 2700X with the hopes of getting the rumored 3800X in 2019, but if you are the type that upgrades every 5 years or whatever than yeah the 8700K is currently a great gaming CPU

Someone asked if you were gonna game at 1080p.  If you're gaming above 1080p then CPU speed matters less or perhaps not at all.  Unless you're getting a 2080ti -- then at 1440p gaming you will see some gains from a faster CPU.  That also depends on the games you're playing though.  So older games will benefit more from a faster CPU than newer AAA titles.  If you're gaming at 4k then you will most likely not see any difference between CPUs.

I've streamed my gaming with my 2700X and it played flawlessly and streamed perfectly using OBS.

I have been considering this a lot personally. I have always been an "intel biased" user, to tell the truth. I've never derided AMD users, but ive always turned my nose up at their offerings. This year has been the first time i've really been tempted. the benchmarks for the 2700x look great, slower than the 8700k/9700k, but not noticeably so. especially if you go to higher resolutions.

Then the other thing that really had me interested was the fact the new Ryzen chips coming out early next year will be fully compatible with a motherboard for the 2700x. so you can potentially get a 2700x now and sell it when the new chips come out and keep everything else. Upgrading CPUs has been a big pain to me when you have to swap the motherboard and the ram too usually, annoys me to no end

If you had to pick right now, i would suggest the AMD one, which is big coming from someone whos always turned their nose up at them. I'm personally considering it, but since i have a 4790k i think i also might be waiting until the 2019 AMD chips come out before i make the swap

i'd get a newer motherboard with the choice to upgrade to zen 2 in the future, usually better vrm too, for a gtx 1070, just go with a 2700x. I recommend better ram.

If you really want single threaded performance, i recommend getting a 9700k and pushing it to the max to gain about 15% over the 2700x, or just wait for zen 2 (if you are upgrading your gpu in the future). I see people going nuts with their 9700k oc as the initial temperature problems of the 9th gen intel cpu seemed to be overblown (5.2-5.4 on 1.4v)

I think it's more along the lines of "great but not the best," it's definitely better than just good.
