how should i go about upgrading my laptop?

my gaming laptop has 8gb of ram at the moment. i want to upgrade to 16gb.

 

should i open up my laptop first and buy identical ram, or can i buy a ddr4 8gb sodimm and be confident it will work?

You might wanna open the back to see the slots.

Usually gaming laptop already have 2 memory for dual channel.

But if you only have 1 populated, you're lucky.

Just add another.

 

You also can add is NVME SSD if you haven't already.

Other thing you can upgrade is the CPU, if its socketed.

Or if you are not satisfied with your screen you can replace it with a better one, say IPS.
