4790K a hothead?

I'm trying to test out an i7 4790K, but the only cooler I have to test with is a CM Hyper TX3 (92mm), and unfortunately I don't have the stock fan, so I'm using another 92mm I had around which sounds like a jet engine (must be doing a good 3000rpm). Even with the fan going mental, the CPU is reaching close to 80C stock clocked on the nastiest part of Prime95 balanced test. I've tested a lot of chips and never seen one get this hot with 'ok' cooling at stock clocks. I'm sure the seating of the cooler is ok. Should I be worried or is this normal?

It's hard to tell without having all the info... have you checked what voltage is the cpu running at? if you have it set on auto in the BIOS/UEFI it could maybe spike up the voltage much higher than it needs to when it's under high load such as prime95 which is pretty intensive and can generate a lot more heat than if the processor was under a actual real load.

The tx3 is pretty small, not really gonna be the ideal cooler for the 4790k. 80C is fine as a peak temp, but is that cooler really "ok" cooling?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

TX3 is a mediocre cooler, even with it's original fan. A Hyper 212 is bare minimum for playing with a 4790k in my opinion and experience.

 

That being said, I've used a TX3 to cool a 4690k and even overclocked never saw temps higher than low 70s. Possible you have a dud 4790k, or your voltage is just way too high but without some better cooling to compare it with it's hard to say.

Seems like an accurate turnout. 

 

What all does the test consist of? 

Delid and get a real cooler or let it bake assuming it won’t be at load like that for long periods.
