CPU upgrade for AM3+ socket

Ok, so I want to upgrade my CPU for my computer. It's an AMD FX 6300 Processor, which is in a AM3+ (942) socket. It is sitting on an ASRock, 960GM-GS3 FX mobo. Question is, can I just slap on any CPU that is AM3+ socket, or is there a very specific CPU that I have to use? My budget is $100 for a new (or used) CPU. I want it to be equal to or greater than an i5 in terms of performance.

There's nothing worth upgrading on that plaform

just save up for like an R3 2200G + ASrock Pro4 + 8GBs of 3000mhz DDR4 probably about $250 for that upgrade.

You're probably looking at an AMD 8320 or something along those lines for you $100 budget. I know the 95XX will probably need a 990fx board. Save some money and get a newer i5 or Ryzen

You can use any AM3+ cpu, but there isn't much point in doing so.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

AM3+ is basically a dead end. The sooner you ditch it the better you will be down the line. Even an entry level AM4 board with a 2200G would better than any AM3+ CPU whether you plan to upgrade or not

Ok guys, so looking at what the majority have said, AM3+ is out of question. So here is a new question: Should I go to AM4 and possibly get a RYZEN, or should I switch to intel and get an i5?

What's your GPU?

AM4 is likely the better platform overall.

Bout $250 for the $100 R3 2200G, or look for sales on the R5 1600/R5 2600 in the future like what's going on right now.

Just don't buy anything until you can buy it all at once.

Sell those components and go for a Ryzen 1600 since you already have a graphics card you don't need to get a G chip

ASUS X470-PRO • R7 1700 4GHz • Corsair H110i GT P/P • 2x MSI RX 480 8G • Corsair DP 2x8 @3466 • EVGA 750 G2 • Corsair 730T • Crucial MX500 250GB • WD 4TB

AM3+ isn't worth upgrading. A Ryzen 5 1600 is a solid choice.
