Lets talk temps - Custom pc case

RAM-001

So, to begin with I was bored after finishing Electrical Engineering at University, and between waiting to start my job, I built a computer case.

I had some parts laying around and thought why not!!

So to give you an idea before I create the build log and show off my abomination, I'm going to talk temps.

So the case is as follows

Asus crosshair formula V mother board

hd7950 GPU - (Shroud removed and fans replaced with 2 high flow fans)

AMD fx8350 - (212 Evo heatsink with no fans on

case has 4 x 120mm intake fans and 2 120mm exhaust fans.

Hard to explain how I set the airflow up so will have to wait until I get the pics done.

So, to begin with, its summer here in lovely South Wales UK and ambient temp inside the room im in with all external doors and windows open is 22c.

First test of the computer was carried out at idle and the results are below.

Cpu - 25 c

GPU - 31 c

case temp - 27 c

Then I launched up some games and left them running. First was sniper elite 3 on ultra

Gpu - 60 c

cpu - 35 c

Now I have launched Prime95 to test the cpu

cpu temp reached and stayed at 47 c

My question is, are these temps acceptable for only air cooling? As none of the fans are right up against components would I benefit from high flow fans?

Those are fairly good temps. You won't really see any benefit with any more fans or different fans

Largely depends on what frequencies, voltage, load, silicon variation etc. Other important components to monitor voltage if that's your thing are the GPU and CPU VRMs. Also, wasn't stated how those temp readings were measured, so also be aware software monitoring isn't always accurate (specifically on FX series CPUs). AMD recommends using their Overdrive software to determine if CPU is at suitable temp, within what they call a "thermal margin".

CPU: AMD Sempron 2400+ / MOBO: Abit NF7-S2G / GPU: WinFast A180BT 64MB / RAM: Mushkin DDR333 256MBx2 / HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 120GB

Those would be normal temps, granted that CPU might show bit wrong temps.

Ok, so opened up Overdrive: All temps at idle. Room temp is still 22 c

Cpu average thermal margin over all core: 61.39 c at 4.2 ghz

I have added another fan above the gpu between it and the cpu heatsink and got that down to an average 30 c

I guess there is probably some more configurations I could try so ill see what I can do and post the results up here.

Im happy with a 5 c drop on the gpu from removing a dead spot from the rear of it.

Under load 100%

Cpu thermal margin hovers around the 26 c mark. average 26.88 c

RESULT!!!

added a couple more fans in some select places. Got a thermal margin now of 33.5 c on full load.

Idles at 3 c above ambient!!!
