Should i buy used ram?

Go to solution Solved by dizmo,

Yes. You're perfectly fine.

Yes. Just either test it beforehand or make sure you have an easy return channel if it doesn't work.

I've bought used RAM on eBay, paid with PayPal, and no issues (the fact that everything arrived and worked correctly helps :P).

Eh, with RAM there's almost never a problem sending it in for warranty. My dad's bought used RAM for decades, RMA'd tons of it without issue.

It's just as safe as buying a CPU within 3 years of launch. Foolproof.

So i can buy for about 40 euro 2x 4 (8GB in total) of ddr4 ram. Wich is about 5 months old. There might be warranty on it too i didnt ask the seller yet. He says it works 100 procent and i can come and test te pc with the sticks in it. Should i buy secondhand ram?

I have mushkin ram from 2006 still running currently, and has been used pretty much daily. Ram generally doesn't degrade much from just use alone, so long as it was actually made well.

CPU: AMD Sempron 2400+ / MOBO: Abit NF7-S2G / GPU: WinFast A180BT 64MB / RAM: Mushkin DDR333 256MBx2 / HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 120GB

if you can pick it up in person and can verify if it is working or not that is a good sign.

buying used ram from an unknown seller online and have it shipped to you is a different story - i've had ram sent to me in a fucking paper envelope with no bubble wrap or ESD bag or nothing - this happened more than once. and of course half the sticks arrived dead

Most ram has lifetime warranties, and the most manufacturers dont need receipts (check beforehand - Corsair are one of the few, if the only that need the original invoice).

I've even heard of people on this forum buying broken ram for cheapo and sending it back to the manufacturer for new ram, and I also went and bought my current ram from ebay, though it was a brand new sealed kit for cheap.

I mean a trusted seller who will accept returns if DOA, no hassle, or through some "consumer protection" program, like what eBay gives you if you pay with PayPal (so if the product is defective and the seller doesn't respond accordingly, you just get the money back from PayPal and they go after him).

Or with ram, if its listed for next to nothing as a faulty item already, check the manufacturer warranty and see if you can return it on lifetime warranty without proof of purchase.

Some sellers either arent aware of the lifetime warranty, or dont want to pay return shipping costs / dont want the ram anymore.

Sounds like a good idea, RAM is one of those things that tends to not fail, and even if it does, the manufacturers know this and so they will often cover it with a lifetime warranty.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

except when it is DDR 2 RAM :D - and yes, that stuff can still be bought new but i assume that is all NOS and i highly doubt a used kit of DDR 2 can still be RMA'ed
