Personal opinions on RGB....

When most people think of RGB, they usually mean the rainbow puke effect which, in my opinion, is fun for a bit but, it gets old fairly quickly.

I think I never heard people like "rainbow" effect before rgb was a thing

because BLINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG and unicorn vomit.

no hate on rgb, i love a little rgb too, mostly to be able to change my neutral color themed build to any color with just a few clicks using awful rgb software. just not too much as sometimes they end up looking like unicorn vomit.

I wasn't in the PC space when people used cathode tubes and stuff like that but, I'm guessing that effect just wasn't possible.

I think the question is a bit misplaced.  The answer to why people like RGB is that it looks cool.  I would instead pose the question why do people care what the PC looks like?  Obviously I can understand wanting a showpiece, but I'm surprised by the number of people that this seems to include.  It seems to be the majority which is really surprising to me.  Personally, I just want something sleek and understated that stays out of the way.  Not ugly at all, but not trying to get attention.  I would have guessed more people are like myself if I didn't know better.

Well I think a lust for looks started it like I said, but if you mean the physical evolution, I would say that it went something like this: at some point, people started getting into case lighting, keyboard backlighting, etc. (this was like at least 10+ years ago now I think), and over time they just realized "what if I could change the colour at will instead of being stuck with one thing forever?"

People like bright shiny things. Always have.

Why is RGB so popular now? Because RGB became cheap to do and manufacturers can charge more for something that has RGB. Add "Gamer" or "Gaming" to the product title and it's easy money.

Personally I hate all rgb junk. Pc case should be only black with one or two small LEDs for power and drive. I don't need any glass or plexi  in my case - I know what is inside. RGB PC cases with glass are great for circus.

When RGB diodes was mass produced (5years ago i think), before that you can use only 1 color.

Now RGB is cheap, you can get 5metres of RGB strip for less than $10.

The trend of using RGB strip from the underground scene later adopted by manufacturer to add values to the product.

I feel like I'm one of the only people that completely avoids "gamer" versions of stuff, it all just looks so tacky to me and seems to be stuck in some weird early 2000s design language.

That said, I'm also in my thirties and have outgrown the target audience for those aesthetics I guess.

My case is placed behind my monitor, its also oriented with the tempered glass facing the wall due to my power outlets location towards the right of the table. I do not care for RGB so this is perfect for me really, and since none of my parts have any RGB anyway.
