Help with GTX 770?

Hey guys, so my current rig has a GTX 770 in it (old I know but it still works great). I saw an ad on craigslist for some guy selling his 770 for $30, except that it "doesn't work". He claims that it "powers on and the fans spin" but doesn't output anything to the display. I'm due for a GPU upgrade but before I do that I'm really tempted to buy this and see if I can somehow make it work with my system in SLI, but do you guys think this is even possible? Is it worth the risk? I trust my technical troubleshooting capabilities but I don't have a ton of experience with dead cards. I like to think that since the fans still spin and it "turns on" that maybe he's just overlooking something with his system (Bios, Drivers, etc.), but I suppose it could just be dead. Has anyone experienced an issue like this before or have advice on whether or not I should risk the money on it? I'm a student so I don't have a ton of cash to throw at a new, more powerful card, so maybe this could work for me? Any advice or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I wouldnt recommend buying it. In theory if it's just a damaged display output then you can SLI with it, but there's just too many possible faults that makes the card not output anything.

Thanks for the reply! While I agree that there are lots of possible faults, do you think the fact that it still powers up matters at all or helps determine the issue? Faulty display output could potentially be solved by using a different output port right?

I dont think so. Many types of internal damage just arent visible to the naked eye. Also working fans do not mean the card can still function as a graphics card.

Thanks guys! @Jurrunio You're right the risk is probably too great. @GDRRiley I'll offer him $5 and see what he says, if he agrees I can potentially play around with it or have a nice paperweight at worst. :D

Maybe go over and look at it quickly, don't fix it for him if you realise it doesn't work just say your a collector or something XD.

Working fans but no display means a few things. Either:

Display ports are damaged

Traces to display ports are damaged

One or more of the solder balls under the GPU package for the display traces are damaged

The display circuitry in the GPU is damaged

So no don’t bother.

Broken hardware isn't worth $30. Throw a $5 at him like was suggested and if he doesn't take it for that then hes dumb. No ones gonna buy it.

Currently majoring in computer networking. That's about it yeah. Not much goes on in my life.
