Ryzen setup

Go to solution Solved by just_dave,

My Advice: Get the Crosshair, save your money and get 1700. Asus boards work with basically anything, but its better to get the Flare-X from G.Skill, the best way to go is 16gb FlareX kit with 3200MHz speed and C14 timings. Invest the saved money from CPU to cooling and get something like H100i V2

Hi all,

I have just brought 2 RX 64 vega's that I would like to crossfire, what would be the best motherboard & cpu setup for gaming?

ATX B350 mobo and Ryzen 5 1600. 1700's extra cores only comes into play when streaming, in games it's not really used.

So I am just trying to work all this out, what makes this board better for crossfire?

Why spend that money on those GPU's, and sell short in your board? I'd look at x370 that way you should be getting better hardware to support the massive GPUs. I've experienced the budget and mid range cards shorting out. I now spend the extra on the higher chipset boards because they seem to last a lot longer.

I'd say a X370 motherboard would be better for his use case, both how the second slot only being 4X isn't ideal and better VRMs as hey, who doesn't like cooler VRMs and higher overclocks? :P

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

X370 would be better as it has more pcie bandwidth and has better support for higher speed ram. I would say the asrock tahci is a good option

Yeah either will be fine. The 1700 may last a bit longer but if you go with the 1600 now you can always go with a 1700 or 2700 later down the line.

Thanks for the help guys

I have to warn you, not all X370 have better VRMs than B350s. This is mostly with Gigabyte, most of their mobos have shit VRMs up to Gaming K5, Gaming K7/ Gaming 5 are fine.

Asus does this only with one mobo and thats the X370 Prime Plus which isnt optimal for Ryzen 7

MSI boards should be avoided completely

ASRock is fine but Asus boards are better

Don't buy Apple M1 computers with 8GB of RAM

I am thinking of the ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero and paring it with the ryzen 7 1700X, but I need to look into the ram a bit more as there seems to be ryzen specific ram

Yeah, that's basically the best board you can buy for Ryzen right now.

Actually, there's the Crosshair 6 Extreme above it, but I don't really think it offers too much more.

As for the RAM, I got G.Skill Trident Z and with that same motherboard and CPU there was no problem -Running at the rated 3200Mhz with actually slightly better than rated timings. G.Skill FlareX, as @dave_k mentioned, is supposed to be 'designed for Ryzen', so I imagine it should work even better.

As for the choice of CPU, the conventional wisdom is to get the 1700 and overclock it, but there are numbers floating around showing higher binning in the 1700X/1800X and the X models do get more aggressive XFR, so it's really just what it's worth to you. I personally got the 1700X because it was only $20 more, and there's certainly an argument for the 1800X if you just have the money and want the best (highest-binned) part, though you should be able to get all three to similar clocks.

"Do as I say, not as I do."

-Because you actually care if it makes sense.
