940m vs. MX150?

I'm looking for laptops under or at $800 with a dGPU for schoolwork and light gaming. My current picks are an Acer unit with a 940m at $570 and an MSI unit with an MX150 for $800. Ignoring all other factors, is the performance difference of an MX150 worth the $230 price hike?

According to Userbenchmark the 1030 (which is what the MX150 is based on) is around %75 better than the 940.

That's what prompted my search, however I couldn't find the laptop he mentioned in his review (the $600 mx150) and he never started what model it was. Checking around they were usually like $750-$800

Mind if I ask why not go with the Dell Inpsiron 7567?  It starts at $800, and comes with a GTX 1050 which would kill both the 940mx and the MX150

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

Trying to avoid the really edgey looking gamer laptops, although that one is a good choice and I will definitely keep it in mind

Edgy as in, like, cringey and mainstream sort of, or edgy as in the edges? The Dell Inspiron isn't edgy, or edgy. :P

That's why I recommended the Dell Inspiron 7567.  It's a gaming laptop, sure, but it's refined.  This isn't an MSI or Alienware laptop.

Why not go for the even less gamer-looking laptop design? It's the same chassis as the previous model, the 7559, I looked at one at Office Depot and... yeah it's the same chassis and everything, just updated hardware. 4GB 1050 too. $800.

Just stumbled upon the Eluktronics W650KK1, it's around $950 but it's got a casual look and packs some power. It comes with a G4560 and GTX 1050 ti. You can also opt for the i7 7700 gtx 1050ti variant for $100 more. Idk what happened to the price, because the video I watched stated he picked it up from the website for about $300 cheaper. The website is down for renovation right now, so I'd keep an eye on the website.

Why would you bother though? You'd have garbage battery life and a meh GPU paired with a really potent processor. Essentially you'd have the most weird laptop combination available.

True, the battery life does ruin it. We don't know why he wants a laptop though, we can only assume ease of transport.

If it's for college he should just build a desktop instead, I'll link a great video for why.

Please tell people to stop looking at this video... like... Really, the guy doesn't even understand the fact of the laptop having a SSHD. I.E. the 8GB SSD flash cache on the drive is NOT a separate drive, it's part of the hard drive itself, and this guy has no idea of what that means. He's literally as ill-informed as you can get.

Also, yeah I like how the video thumbnail shows a Razer laptop. I mean, I agree with THAT bit, but to say all gaming laptops are garbage because Razer is garbage is inherently wrong.

Inspiron 5577

The Dell Inspiron 5577's specs look good on paper, however its low-quality TN display with poor contrast and viewing angles I would say is really not good for a laptop in this price bracket. The Dell Inspiron 7567 base model has the same issue but in the USA you can get the IPS display + 1050 Ti + SSD model for $833 new / $769 refurbished.

Nice. That would be an even better panel than the IPS in the IPS Inspiron. Did you receive the exact model from that seller, SPB1?

YUP! The screen is 50% brighter at 300 nits from around 200ish. Color accuracy is supposedly around 90% sRGB and 70% RGB. It's well worth the upgrade. I was also VERY shocked to feel how heavy this screen was too. They aren't flimsy in the slightest. >.> Quite the contrary.

Dells' Inpsiron gaming lines, the 7559, the 7567, and even the new 5000 series kinda make this point moot, as all of them have very good battery life.

I've used my 7559 as my daily driver for college.  Not once by the end of the school day was I rushing for a charger.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.
