Can't tell if it's because Ryzen competes with it at a much lower price, and there's no sales... or if it actually costs that little to create the chip, and microcenter is actually tired of holding stock of overpriced chips...

Miocrocenter almost always sells processors under cost.  

 

In this case it is probably a mix of a couple things.   Skylake/Kabylake X coming out, Ryzen, and just a random sale.   I got the same processor for 350 around Christmas and that was before any of this.  

Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly; the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly.

Great deal. Just overall bad time to buy a processor unless you absolutely have to.
