Pre-applied thermal paste on Corsair H100I V2?

Go to solution Solved by Deli,

The pre-applied thermal paste is from Dow Corning. That is very good stuff. As good as the better aftermarket one, like the Noctua NT-H1..

I am buying a Corsair H100I V2 to cool my i7 6700K. I have thermal paste remover from Arctic and microfiber cloths, along with other better thermal compound. I have heard that pre applied thermal paste is not that good at all (dangerous CPU temps, shorter CPU life), so I plan to remove the pre applied paste on this cooler and replace with my own. Is the pre applied removed normally just like any other thermal paste (with my arctic remover)? Or am I wrong about pre applied paste being worse and just leave it there? And also, whenever I remove the cooler for a quick upgrade or mobo change/CPU change (which might be soon, as in weeks or a month), will I need to re apply the thermal paste even though it is freshly on?

you can remove it and apply your favourite thermal paste. a rerouting should be accompanied by a fresh clean application of paste

having said that the default one is not too bad either so for a first mount it is quite adequet.

The pre applied isn't that bad, though whatever you have on hand is probably better.

Yes, you remove the pre applied just like anything else. Whenever you take the CPU cooler off or whatever, you should reapply thermal paste.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Thanks! You likely saved me some time of changing thermal paste, I am convinced to use stock paste on this cooler.

  • 10 months later...

I sincerely regret removing the thermal paste that came with my h100i v2. It performed 3 to 5 degrees Celsius better than my Arctic Silver 5.

I'm going to buy some NT-H1 and try it out.
