Posted May 23, 2017 Be aware Intel say not to overclock the 7700k due to its thermal issues. The short story is they cheaped out using silicon under the IHS rather than solder (saying they "can't"). If you overclock a 7700k its gonna get HOT. Typically mid 80s so you are going to want good water cooling as a minimum or delid and replace the TIM if you are feeling more adventurous. They used Dow-Corning TC-1996, which is the same paste that EVGA uses and that Intel used with Devils Canyon and Skylake, which didn't have thermal issues. Intel uses excessive amounts of adhesive so the die doesn't make good contact with the IHS and this is what's causing issues, not the thermal paste. And FYI they can't solder it: http://overclocking.guide/the-truth-about-cpu-soldering/ Believe me, they wouldn't mind spending $2 more to solder the chip if they could CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K | Motherboard: AsRock X99 Extreme4 | Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming | RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws4 2133MHz | Storage: 1 x Samsung 860 EVO 1TB | 1 x WD Green 2TB | 1 x WD Blue 500GB | PSU: Corsair RM750x | Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro (White) | Cooling: Arctic Freezer i32 Mice: Logitech G Pro X Superlight (main), Logitech G Pro Wireless, Razer Viper Ultimate, Zowie S1 Divina Blue, Zowie FK1-B Divina Blue, Logitech G Pro (3366 sensor), Glorious Model O, Razer Viper Mini, Logitech G305, Logitech G502, Logitech G402
 That's poor reasoning and its effectively saying don't overclock an unlocked CPU and that yeah tough luck we didn't bother improving an unlocked CPU (lets be honest its unlocked for 1 reason so Intel claiming ignorance is pretty bad). This is the best they can do though.... BTW, they use this thermal paste because it is very resistant to thermal shock and because it lasts for a very long time. They could have used liquid metal, but it would need to be replaced after 3-4 years. 1 hour ago, PCGuy_5960 said: And FYI they can't solder it: http://overclocking.guide/the-truth-about-cpu-soldering/ Believe me, they wouldn't mind spending $2 more to solder the chip if they could CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K | Motherboard: AsRock X99 Extreme4 | Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming | RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws4 2133MHz | Storage: 1 x Samsung 860 EVO 1TB | 1 x WD Green 2TB | 1 x WD Blue 500GB | PSU: Corsair RM750x | Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro (White) | Cooling: Arctic Freezer i32 Mice: Logitech G Pro X Superlight (main), Logitech G Pro Wireless, Razer Viper Ultimate, Zowie S1 Divina Blue, Zowie FK1-B Divina Blue, Logitech G Pro (3366 sensor), Glorious Model O, Razer Viper Mini, Logitech G305, Logitech G502, Logitech G402
 Posted May 23, 2017 As one who has used both the H100 V2 on a OCd i7 5820K and a NH D15 on a AMD Ryzen 1800X I would go with the Air cooled NH D15. Noise wise it was far superior even when I replaced the stock fans on the H100 V2. Performance wise the NH D15 is plenty enough even for an OCd chip. On my 1800X it keeps it at 47-54 idle and 65-77 load with a 4.0ghz OC on Ryzen its about 80 C under load. Not a one to one comparison I know but from having used both coolers I think the Noctua one is the way to go they even throw in the two 140mm fans. This is all at stock fan speeds too. Another thing to consider temps wise is with the liquid cooler you might see lower initial temps but it will also take a longer time to cool off after load/gaming. As long as your case can fit it I would say go with the Noctua air cooler. It will run plenty cool on pretty much any chip you put it on and be quieter as well. Additionally, you wont have to worry about pump failures, leaks, RMAs etc... If you were going to hard core try to OC the chip to its limits then I might consider the Corsair water cooler. Keep in mind while a water cooler will give you better temps it does take longer to cool off and pumps can break leaks can happen etc.
