The hyperoptic connection is £50.00 per month the adsl backup is £22 so it's not exactly cheap but I think it's worth the expense :)

Compared to what we are paying here that is cheap. If I convert to £, I am paying £80 per month for a 4 MBPS (ADSL) Connection Speed

What is up with most people having bad ping's and upload?i

Evil ISPs... I think I've said enough.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

That is the problem when using cable ethernet. It has good download and not really the best upload. Well, the good download does in some cases not even apply to Germany, since they totally overload their lines.

The ISPs here in Germoney use old copper infrastructure. Rolling out fiber is not a very common thing and the ISPs do their best to get the most out of copper. Since subscription based cable television is less prevalent in the US the infrastructure is somewhat different. It is very common that there is only so much bandwith available for an entire quarter so you have slow internet at peak times (I'm talking about cities of 100 to 150k inhabitants).

There are some villages that dig their own fiber trench and kind of do their own thing but that is very rare. If you live downtown: you have great internet. If you live more than a mile out of the historical city center: you are sol - shit out of luck.

I estimate that it is only a matter of one decade until fiber internet becomes the main reason for young people to move to a certain location. A friend of mine did already rule out one flat because the internet was crappy.

The plan of the ISPs seems to max out copper and use limitation of bandwith for peak times for certain services unless you are part of the paying 10 percent. Cable internet providers have become a real alternative in most areas since they offer up to 150mbit down and 25 up (or similar) whereas DSL only gets you 4MBit down and sub 1Mbit up.

For completness' sake my speedtest in the university wifi. A bit slower than expected but since I'm sitting here hours on end large file transfers are a piece of cake. But it is quiet here. Since I do not have the appropriate certificate I cannot use the wired connection :/

Can't get the image to load, sorry
