Kickstarter is risky for hardware projects like this.

Looks very promising to me. Mobile VR seems most likely to be the future of VR to me since people are actually willing to pay for high quality screens and decent processing power in a phone.  The only thing that concerns me is it appears to only have 1 base station. Ask any Oculus Rift or PSVR owner how much fun 180 degree roomscale is. The answer is frustrating as all hell. Either go with 2 for full 360 degree room scale, or do what I was assuming and use some sort of inside out tracking for roomscale without any base stations. That's what Google has been working on with WorldSense, but that's a much harder feat to achieve. Everything in this Kickstarter uses existing tech, just combined in a new way. But that's a good thing in terms of success rate.

Looks interesting but I am more interested in a more stream lined VR experience .. few more years down the road.

Vive owner here. 

It will be nice to get that entry level market if it works properly. if it works as well/better than PS VR id be happy with its existence. Anything to spread VR tech around is a good thing.

THAT BEING SAID I would say the resolution of the vive screens are at best adequate resolution. I question how good this will handle some things with a lower resolution. For example, Elite Dangerous in VR is unplayable unless you are super sampling on the Vive at its higher resolution. 

Now with steam, VR im told the rendered image is outputted at 2160×1200 and then super-sampled 1.4 times even before the user applies anymore manual super sampling on the game.

Steam VR was made with 2160x1200 in mind, so I question if its still going to be rendering at that (even on a phone with a lower res,) plus doing its automated super sampling. Cause if it is the user is going to have to be pushing the manual super sampling (again on top of the automated one)  even higher than a vive user will be to make some things readable. (I don't claim to know a ton of what goes on behind the scenes with the vive so this might be silly just a thought that crossed my mind.)

I definitely question though 1 tracking station being used though for sure and if that is really enough for adequate room scale.

I own just about all the headsets on or coming to the market. Vive is the most feature complete headset, but also least comfortable (until we get deluxe strap). The oculus is comfortable, better controllers, and the software is loads better, but it has numerous other issues. Psvr has terrible framerate in most games, and tracking is pretty bad. F0ve is just awful all around. 

Wishing leads to ambition and ambition leads to motivation and motivation leads to me building an illegal rocket ship in my backyard.

Vive owner. 

 

I've used the other headsets and for me fps and tracking is king. I feel the difference with the Vive, though I put a lot of effort into the locations of my base stations. We just don't have the hardware to go with higher resolutions, and the lower grade stuff is painful to use. 

 

Like Christian said once the Vive gets the strap it should have shipped with, I think that and the Rift are the best options.
