gpu not engaging in game

hi i recently built a new computer running a rx 480 and i5 6600k. But when i go to play games the computer will not use my gpu. the monitor is plugged into the gpu and the PCI is selected as primary in bios.

You'll need to clarify what you mean by 'it will not use my gpu'

If it's plugged into the GPU and it's showing an image, it should. I don't actually see how it can't.
