Is it bad for my CPU to be running constantly at 80c under max load?

It's fine. It will still last a while.

he might want to upgrade his cooling at some point though, 80c is borderline imo

I like to kill hardware. In 2016 alone I have killed 20 Xeon 5160, and 10+ Pentium 4.

Would help if you said what CPU you have got, although 80C is high for most CPUs really.

You can get, heck, even a cheapy Cooler Master Hyper T2 for $15-$20 bucks and it will be well worth it. A tad noisy, but cools decent. They're around $18 usd on Amazon and Newegg.

There is enough youth in this world, how about a fountain of smart?

I have run multiple CPUS 24/7 for many years at 80°C. No issues so far. At best it will reduce the CPU life expectancy from 20+ years to 10+ years.
