Best 3000 MHz RAM For Ryzen?

Hey there, folks. I'm looking to buy some new memory for the R5-1600X I'll be picking up soon. I've decided to grab the Asus B350 Prime Plus mobo to go with it since Hardware Unboxed was able to get 3200 MHz memory out of it with its latest BIOS update, and its I/O looks pretty good (it has eight USB ports and I'm kind of a USB port whore).

 

Anyway, what RAM kit should I pick up to have the best chance of hitting 2933/3000 MHz on that board? I'm looking to grab 16GB total, and hopefully not spending more than $120 or $130 on memory.

 

I've been using the same DDR3 for the last seven years, so I'm a little clueless on what DDR4 is good.

I'd say Ripjaws V 3200 MHz 2x8gb. It's only $120, has Samsung B-Die, so it's worth it IMO.

Sounds good. I was going to grab the G.Skill Flare X DIMMs since everyone seems to love them, but damn are they expensive.

Yeah, I honestly don't see how they could be "Ryzen optimized" other than being single rank and using B-Die, which I'm pretty sure Ripjaws v already is. Could just be a way to milk money

Only things I noticed about the Ripjaws V that the Flare X has on it are the timings. Ripjaws V is Cas 16, 16-18-18-38 while the Flare X is Cas 14, 14-14-14-34. Hardware Unboxed showed that timings, while they have an effect, don't really affect performance too much. Would they affect stability/my ability to hit high frequencies?

 

Sorry if these seem like dumb questions. I've never had to worry about memory speed and timings before Ryzen. Lol.

I'm not too sure about that. I don't think it will too much, though it especially isn't worth the extra cost. The thing is, one you go past 3200 MHz you're likely to hit an IMC limit rather than ram limit. In fact, you might even hit an IMC limit around 2933 MHz instead.

If you look at the price of the 3200MHz CL14 Flare X kit that G.SKILL offers, they are close in price to the 3600MHz from their other product lines that are for Intel systems. This tells me that Ryzen is pretty particular on the memory ICs. I highly doubt anything besides Ryzen rated memory kits will run at the rated Intel XMP frequency and timing. I'm pretty sure these Flare X kits can be overclocked to 3600MHz and beyond on intel platforms. This is just my 2 cents.

The thing with flare x is by "Ryzen optimized" it just means they're single rank Samsung b die kits. All the 3600 MHz kits are Samsung b die since only Samsung b die can really hit that high . So that's not really that big of an issue.

 

You can look at this for a detailed list of ram kits. You should probably look for single rank Samsung b die ram kits.

Well, I ended up buying G.Skill Ripjaws V Model F4-3200C16D-16GVKB, which doesn't appear to be on that list you just posted. I actually Googled it just now, and a Reddit thread suggests that they're SK Hynix rather than Samsung.

 

That sucks. Only time will tell if it works well or not.

I've got my G.Skill Trident Z RGB running at 3200MHz no problems. Should be noted that my first CPU did have a problem and when I got a replacement first time was a go.
