Upgrading from 4460 to 6700?

Hey guys I recently started doing some youtube vidoes and found that I can't really play games while I wait for videos to export. Is upgrading from 4460 to 6700 going to fix my problem or just going to make a slight improvement. I've been researching and I found that gaming wise the upgrade is never worth it but I'm not sure how it would stand up to a more multi threaded work load.

Playing games while exporting is not possible. It takes all system resources therefore making it impossible to play

It will only speed up render times

What are you using for renders?  I know Premiere Pro will pin my i7 to 100% so anything with 8 or fewer logical cores won't help, and I have a feeling that it can probably use more than that.  Rather than upgrading the CPU, (or perhaps in addition to), I would recommend trying gaming with your render either paused or at least set to "lowest" priority in task manager.  Even consider using "set affinity" to limit the number of cores it can use.

it will eat up 2 22cores. it will use everything it can.

I'm using ShotCuts, just keeping it simple while I'm getting started, was planning on going to premiere if I keep at it

That's what I suspected.  In that case, I stand by my suggestion since it's the only hope (if that's indeed the program you're using OP).

Well if it's anything like Premiere, it will use everything it can, so try what I suggested.  Depending on how it was coded, it may or may not help.  If it does, problem solved.  If not, there's not really much you can do other than getting a separate render machine.

you could build a 2nd box for 300$ that should do well at rendering.

That sounds a little low to me but I suppose with finding old, preowned server parts you could do quite well.  Being that it's for renders, you would only have to concern yourself with total CPU performance and not single threaded, which opens your options quite a bit.

Im not sure about that. Theres many videos showing such case scenario so it might depend on the video settings which are used to render the video or other factors.

Yeah it can definitely be done, just how well varies by chip.  if you had, for example, a 6900k, you could have half the chip (basically a slower 6700k) work on the render and the other half work on the game and both should run quite well.  With an i5 though, you've got much less to work with...

Couldn't you just realtime priority the game, and set the render program to run at like normal or below normal priority?

I wouldn't suggest putting anything to realtime imo... it can cause issues.  But, you could set the render to low, or better yet, just split them using set affinity so the game gets cores 0 - 7 and the render gets 8 - 15 or something like that

Gaming is questionable (surely not AAA titles...) but i7 will decrease the render time greatly and with an SSD it will be even better.

Not saying it isn't possible but I've yet to see a render that would have benefited from faster storage speeds to the point where the relative loads aren't even in the same order of magnitude

This could be a good idea. Having a dedicated render box means you can set it to render all day and not worry, and that box costs less than a new I7

yeah and it has some space so you could put all finished videos here for a time.
