Please Help!!! Newly built PC, thinking there is a deffective part.

Hello,

I just purchased Intel Broadwell-E 6800k, and tried to turn on my PC after installing. With the 8 pin power connector plugged in, the computer turns on and then instantly off. Without the 8 pin plugged in, all the fans and the LEDs stay on but there is no display. Would like to know what can be done about this.

Thanks

PS-started buying the parts over a year ago so please be go easy on me.

update you BIOS and don't attempt to turn your pc on without the CPU 8 pin. It won't work, it was never intended to work that way.

Search for a tutorial to do so, and be careful, it's easier to triple check every step of updating than recovering a bad BIOS flash.

Cheers!

Faziten, thank you for commenting but I still don't understand your advise, how can I update my bios if i cant even turn on my PC? The 8 pin powers the heart of the whole build and with it the 8 pin plugged in, the pc trys to boot but instantly shuts off.

I think you can't get into BIOS or anywhere near it, because your motherboard doesn't support i7 6800k out of the box.

You need to use old version of 2011 CPU, to update BIOS, and after that i7 6800k will work on your motherboard.

Untill then, you are out of luck.

I don't see how that matters since they both are LGA 2011-v3 sockets

because the x99 is not a new motherboard, the i7 6800k, i7 6850k, etc are all new processors and the old motherboards need an update before they are compatible. You need to put in something like an i7 5820k or some other older based processor.

Thats so stupid! I bought the 6800K off newegg because at the time ($380) it was the better deal compared to the 5820k($360) at the time of purchase.

With all due respect: Google it. Since the beginning of times it's this way with the Tick-Tock Intel model of business. Early chipset boards need bios updates for the second tier of cpu's. If you don't feel like believing this, Google is your friend.

Sadly asrock boards don't let you update without cpu installed. (Asus boards do, just in case you think of changing MoBo).

So in order to use your new rig you have to flash a new bios with Broadwell-E support.

how?

1) Take it to any IT guy/store and ask for a BIOS update. It's not that expensive. (most reasonable choise).

2) Return the board and buy a pre flashed one / buy another board that let you flash without cpu installed or is compatible Out of the box. (it's an odd way to solve, but will work).

3) Ask any friend for a haswell-E cpu temporary. (yeah, i know not everybody has an x99 sitting at home).

4) Buy a haswell-e and return broadwell-e. (why would you do this?)

I explain why i discard a hardware issue here: That particular rig could have 3 different problems.

1) Ram incompatibility. X99 is picky with ram, so checking the compatibility list for your bios version is easy enough to discard. Ripjaws and x99 work fine, hence i discarded this particular problem. (Ram incompatibilty would give a black screen but not an instant shutdown as described)

2) PSU problem. Maybe your 8 pin cable is broken or the psu is broken. Corsair is not like that. Chances are very low for this. That's why i discarded it.

3) BIOS version. That board was launched with haswell and did provide an update for broadwell but it is highly probable that it wasn't pre applied. Shelf boards are never updated unless you buy a pre built rig. This is the highest probability case imho. That's why i recommend you the update.

We could discuss how you could possibly had a DoA motherboard, cpu, psu, ram, etc. It's just 0.000000000000...01% (not the actual chance %, it's for clarification purposes.) cases that this is the actual cause.

We could also consider how you could have bent every possible socket pin causing random problems bla bla. I'm hoping you didn't do this, but still the bios version problem is there.

How to update is up to you. I'd take it to an IT.

Good luck hope you solve it soon.

Thanks again, so basically if i bring my rig into a IT specialist and request them to update my bios they can do so?

yeah, google some hardware store/house next to you, give them a phonecall and ask if they to this kind of service so you don't go in vain. And ask for service price before you go there. You don't want more surprises. Remember the Motherboard should be shipped with the pastic cover that goes in the CPU socket to prevent possible damage. I know it's frustrating to take all appart and into the box. But it could get worse very quick if the precautions are not taken.

Best of wishes dude.

Maybe, but only if they have a Haswell-E CPU on hand they can put in. Most local ones probably won't have one just sitting around. You're probably better off going a your local subreddit or craigslist and asking if anyone has a Haswell-E CPU you can use for 15min while you run the update. You can always contact ASrock and see if you can send them the board and have them do the update.

The best option (if still possible) is to return the board and get one that is compatible out of the box or get an ASUS which allows you to BIOS flash without a compatible CPU installed.

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Spoiler

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.
