Not at all. It would take atleast two more GPU generations at the pace we are going at before the thought of a bottleneck can be a thought.

Current System: CPU - I5-6500 | Motherboard - ASRock H170M-ITX/ac | RAM - Mushkin Blackline 16GB DDR4 @ 2400mHz | GPU - EVGA 1060 3GB | Case - Fractal Design Nano S | Storage - 250GB 850 EVO, 3TB Barracuda | PSU - EVGA 450W 80+ Bronze | Display - AOC 22" 1080p IPS | Cooling - Phanteks PH-TC12DX_BK | Keyboard - Cooler Master QuickFire Rapid(MX Blues) | Mouse - Logitech G602 | Sound - Schiit Stack | Operating System - Windows 10

The OG System: I3-2370M @ 2.4 GHz, 750GB 5400 RPM HDD, 8GB RAM @1333Mhz, Lenovo Z580 Laptop (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS).

Peripherals: G602, AKG 240, Sennheiser HD 6XX, Audio-Technica 2500, Oneplus 5T, Odroid C2(NAS).

How do people still ask this question with a 6700K? Jeez. If you're buying this kind of hardware, you really should know this by now and have invested the time in learning. Linus has done many videos covering this exact topic, as well as doing analysis on how many cores are used in modern titles and how much the CPU matters in terms of load distribution. You'd have been fine with an i5 6600K nevermind the i7. Essentially, barring badly optimised titles and the rare few games that can use more than 4 cores, most of which are still in development, you're fine with a Quad core processor.

CPU: 5930K @ 4.5GHz | GPU: Zotac GTX 980Ti AMP! Extreme edition @ 1503MHz/7400MHz | RAM: 16GB Corsair Dom Plat @ 2667MHz CAS 13 | Motherboard: Asus X99 Sabertooth | Boot Drive: 400GB Intel 750 Series NVMe SSD | PSU: Corsair HX1000i | Monitor: Dell U2713HM 1440p monitor

Exactly, and even then, if Zen is all its cracked up to be, processors with more than 4 cores will be dropping fairly soon. With the industry push Zen will hopefully create, I doubt any 6700K priced processor from Intel or AMD will ever bottleneck a top of the line GPU. Sticking with the 6700K and it'd still hold up for years with no issues.

The extra threads really are starting to be helpful in games nowadays. Depending on the game an i5 can bottleneck.

I think this is still a small niche of games, especially once you remove those that are either badly ported or just poorly optimised. There definitely are some heavily CPU bound titles, most top-down RTS games of the last 10 years will start to make a CPU sweat with lots of physics on-screen at a time (Think Dawn of War, DoW 2). There are some points where having an i7 will definitely help, but at the moment for a purely gaming machine I'd still recommend an i5. From an enthusiasts standpoint though, it's a completely different standpoint. You're no longer building a machine to perform a certain function well, you're building it to be proud of it, and for it to excel in its workloads. So, coming from an enthusiast, If I was building a new machine with this kind of budget in mind, I'd go for the 6700K to start with and possibly go X99 if the money was there.

Every graphics card if it's the cream of the crop can still technically bottlenecked by the processor by way of simply not being the fastest processor. This is an overblown worry.

I'd consider a "real/true/my reality is better than your own" bottleneck when you see almost zero improvement across an upgrade.

Okay but you should really consider upgrading the system if the GPU is only working about 50% of what it should be.

Only at 1080p100hz or above.  Much less so at 1440p, and not at all at 4k.

I doubt that even a Sandy Bridge i5 would bottleneck it.
