i7 2600 VS OC'd E5640 Xeon?

if you want bang for the buck and a boatload of threads/cores , get a dual Slot 1366 board and get 2 E5620´s , i can reccomend it , 8c/16t @ 2.66ghz are fun

At that price point, then it's not bad. Just bench the two and see which one you like better. Not really losing much money since 1366 boards are the most expensive part of making a 1366 build.

Possibly 2011 Xeon is a idea, but yeah you're going to make money if the everything works.

Seems I will be playing with the Xeon, but I wont be replacing my current machine. I just need to find a pair of worthy video cards to play with on the cheap.

Well, the motherboard and E5640 work great, but the Registered RAM unfortunately doesn't. Installing 4x2gb of DDR3 desktop RAM got it running good. I guess I will try to sell the RAM at 0 profit

shame , i got ECC DDR3 running in all kinds of pc´s , from Athlon 2´s over to G620 and the trusty 2600 ,

always used my 1gb stick of ECC(of wich i have 4 for my dual Xeon Server)  to test mobos , never failed me

My CM Hyper 212 Plus arrived yesterday and I then assembled the system. There are a couple of issues.

 

The CM PWM Fan was nearly DOA, it barely spins and it's sporadic at that. I plugged it into other known good motherboards, and it exhibits the same behavior. I replaced the CM fan with a 3 pin 120mm case fan I had in the front of the case and get good cooling now. I will buy 2 new Arctic 120mm PWM fans for the rear exhaust and the CPU cooler.

 

Also the side panel had 2 smaller fans (80mm?) and one of them interfered with the 212+ so i had to remove it leaving a gaping hole in the case right over the cooler. 

 

One lucky thing is that I installed W10 and its activated, the PO must have had 10 as well.

After futzing with the CM fan i discovered the fan was not fully seated on the spindle. anfter clicking it all the way on , the fan works great. currently running at 3.611mhz.
