Is that a floppy drive taped to your monitor?

that's whats holding my keepass file, it's less lose-able than a usb stick :D

W4D3 update:

so.. things slowed down a bit, mostly because some other things happened, and my 3D printer is being rather moody with printing cable clamps.

there's a few things left to be done, i finished cleaning my desk, now it's down to the details (and sorting out the reason stacy's SD card reader isnt working... yes, my server has an SD card reader, ballin' isnt it?)

i also did this more symbolic thing today:

Spoiler

c9358820c4.jpg

those who can still deal with my status updates will know what this is about xD

beyond that, here's some test prints to feast your eyes on:

Spoiler

bc044b24f1.jpg

buddhacules has proven a very good test print (mostly because the model is so fucked even on a perfectly aligned printer it barely prints right.

also, cable brakcets hype:

  • 2 weeks later...

"what year is it" update:

so... things happened, distractions, delays etc..

this is currently the state of things:

- stacy has mobo issues so i decided to just order a decent one, with a side effect that'll probably et explained wide and clear coming week or so

- my 3D printer is done clunking away at cable management brackets, but because cables are still randomly dying on me (NEVER buy chinese cables...) but that should all be settled tomorrow, wiring will finish soon™

- my 3D printer *may* move back to my room, depending on how quiet i can get the new case for it i'm building.

- buddhacules became my test print of choice

- i made a few small changes to my main rig

- there's plans for a new bed, those will only happen after january

the sweet picture goodness:

Spoiler

first off the changes to my main rig:

46f200c459.jpg

the second 5.25" bay already had my hard drive in it, with the remote kinda.. resting on the edge of the bay, since i needed an SD card reader i made some changes, it's now offering a clear view on my hard drive, an *actual* mutli-card reader (none of that 5 bajillion in one actually just SD card reader), and a little shelf for my remote. this remote turns of and off my speakers, and now also my LED strip. (and i have 4 more sockets to control with it if i feel the need to)

739d6e3c15.jpg

and i *totally* caught the 3D printing bug, that usb stick holder in the back is cloud shaped :P

bbf9e0df86.jpg

the current state of the wiring, it's actually pretty clean, i just need to make it look clean :D

6bdf22fc5d.jpg

moving the led strip to the underside of the desk made a huge improvement, the 'under the desk' wiring is basicly done as well.

9f7f1c61f4.jpg

and this is currently the state of stacy, i've prepared the wiring for tomorrow, depending on how fast Bpost is, i expect to have stacy up and running by lunch.

oh, and i almost forgot, i started eating breakfast again from time to time:

that'll be an issue, because i just had an unfortunate drill malfunction while cleaning out a pretty nasty clog from the nozzle xD

what year is it? update 2:

so.. the forum keeps unfollowing my own topic, that's a thing...

and offcourse, delays are a thing as well :D

there's two more things: for a little project for a media center i went ahead to buy the cheapest case my retailer of choice has available, more specificly a zalman case. because Bpost is amazing "next day delivery" took 3 days, and i found this piece of paper flopping around in the case, making me giggle a bit.

Spoiler

84c41c2870.jpg

it kinda cracked me up :P

--

on that note, i probably ranted about the issues with outsourcing things to my parents before in this thread, right?

well... i bugged my parents again about the 5 pieces of wood cut to 55x55cm i asked about when my printer arrived...

they came back with an answer: they were made, they were put somewhere, and they promptly got lost, so they have to make new ones. THIS is why i dont wanna be anywhere near the family company, and somehow my parents have taken until now to realise what a problem this would be if this happened with a paying custommer of the company...

- after having screwed up the shelf spacing in my clouset

- after having screwed up one of the trims on my desk

- after having delivered a cabinet with 6 drawers with only 4 drawers and 2/3rd of the height i asked for

- after having taken over a year to get me handles for my desk drawers

- after having gotten me cable management brackets that literally bend out of shape and break from the weight of a USB cable.

- and now after having straight up lost a 30 minute job i've been patiently waiting for for 2 weeks.

TL/DR: they are starting to realise why i prefer IKEA and the local overpriced DIY store over their company's work.

what year is it? update 3:

so.. i got the 3D printer rolling again, with a new print head allowing me to easily print at a whopping 90mm/s instead of the 50mm/s they suggest with the normal head :P

the printer box is also built, it just needs some finishing touches, but that's for later:

Spoiler

1d695bc021.jpg

beyond that, i have a new rig to introduce (that has gone trough a few namechanges, and hopefully the final part to make it tick will arrive tomorrow)

Spoiler

c6c082f837.jpg

i present to you: "nox, the night rig" which will be doing the thing for my TV, and has been... an interesting experience:

- the first plan was to take stacy's motherboard that has a funky thing going on, but the lowest it supports processor-wise is an i5...

- then i did what you see above, which is basicly the guts of an HP workstation.. which then spontaniously caught fire:

1ee906a181.jpg

ef554cda16.jpg

just wanna mention, yes the cpu fan is spinning in that image, even with this horror show the machine is still rock freaking solid.

so.. tomorrow, fingers crossed, i'll be getting a new mobo, i went for one of those asrock boards with a soldered on quad core celeron, of which each core is faster than this POS :D also, it should be pretty much dead silent beyond the hard drive (yes, i cheaped out, it's running a flaky refurb drive i had on the shelf for years) and i'm gonna try if it's powerful enough for steam in-home streaming.

beyond that, the case you see is literally the cheapest case they had, and has already gotten a branding upgrade thanks to colorfab glowfill:

with flash:

56abdc7ff2.jpg

without flash, just after the first image:

1e6aca8e82.jpg

beyond that, i've also ordered some LEDs to put in this box, and after that it's just cleanup and done :D

i'm replacing the entire board, it's honestly too slow for what i need, there's a whole range of other issues, and pretty much everything else on the board is worn out as well. we're talking like, the plastic on the fan connectors has broken off, the bios battery on this thing was stone freaking dead (that's 10 years of shelf life ;)) and it is somehow only compatible with one of my fans xD

what year is it? update 4:

santa came early, at least one of the santa's did, and i got the new mobo for nox:

Spoiler

639d81bfe4.jpg

that's about the most fancy shot i could make, the inside is bare cardboard with a manual, a driver disk, two sata cables, an IO shield, and a mobo in an antistatic bag tossed into it.

defenately not the unboxing experience i'm used to with asus :D

what i did notice was that this board does not have a cpu 4-pin, so that means i have an extra connector to slap LEDs on when that santa arrives :P

also meant i had more cables to tuck away:

fe7f56bdd3.jpg

the reason the front I/O runs like that is because otherwise the hump around the 24pin gets too big to get the side panel on.

541eef36bb.jpg

this is now what the inside looks like, aint that a cute little mobo :P

and yes, i tossed 8GB ram in there, because i had the sticks anyways, and KDE neon ;)

oh, and yes, that cpu fan is TOTALLY overkill, that's why its clamped to minimum speed, which for some reason isnt a bios feature... asrock ples...

i'm gonna slap LEDs into nox, but i'm probably not gonna wait on that to finish off the whole room rebuild, because i really wanna get this over with xD

It's not the color. It's the way things are positioned. Perpendicular RAM? WHAT YEAR IS THIS?

2 Sata slots? Garbage.

2 PCI-e 1x? Ugh.

And the CPU socket is positioned too low for my tastes. Messes with exhaust pulling air off of the heatsink.

- the permendicular ram is.. strangely common on boards like these, i guess it was cheaper to route...

- the two sata ports is indeed a bit of a bummer, but i guess it's to do with the platform not really being targetted at tons of drives :P

- what else should they put on there? also, only 3 expansion slots is really common on cheap boards, i'm actually digging the idea of them still putting the 16x slot on the second spot.

- what cpu socket? it's a 10 watt embedded celeron, it's not like it even needs fans xD depending on how loud they are, i may remove one or both of the fans. the cpu fan is currently being held on by some carefully bent twist ties :D

I didn't look the mobo up. a 10 watt embedded could prove pretty useful, specially for a HTPC

i'm gonna try out steam in-home streaming, seeing how bad of a dump it took trying to run besiege i dont think it'll be much of a gaming rig tho (that said, intel integrated, running mesa drivers.. i should really look into either adding a GPU or fixing intel drivers if i wanna gaem on it)

That ain't gonna work. In-home streaming has... standards.

EDIT: and in-home streaming goes surprisingly smooth

I am shocked.

Srsly, was fucking around with an old craptop and the bastard electrocuted me.

Once I figure out what the hell I'm doing with my life and actually bite the bullet and get my own place, I'm probably gonna go on a spending spree on second-hand mid-range components. I'm kinda jelly that I found a buttload of mobo/cpu combos that are decent and dirt cheap. i3-3225+itx mobo for $40 :(

i *have* convinced my parents to get me something decent to put under my desk, probably gonna be some "click laminate", feel free to place bets how many years before they finally get me it...

that said, improvements are being made, although rather slowly because things happen...

Spoiler

i now have a stand for my glasses:

and joking about my desk being especially messy at the start aside, 10 minutes ago my desk was even worse, and because of clever planning about what goes where, this is how my desk looks now:

(ignore my 3D printer on the right, it's in testing to see how it deals with different things)
