If I have a ridiculous amount of CPU processing power at my hands, is there a program for bitcoin mining that's CPU oriented? Or is it really not worth doing except with heavy GPU processing power? I have never mined before so talk to me as if I know nothing about it :)

It's not at all worth it, if you compare a GPUs Flops to a CPUs you will see why. GPUs are measured in terra FLOPS, but a CPU is only giga FLOPS.

if the cpu has decent hashrate or any hashrate then yes otherwise no. hashing and numbers matching is how bitcoin mining works if the cpu is too slow for this then no and it cant process fast enough to yeild decent results especially not for the price a decent cpu costs

well... you can cpu mine, it's just very, very NOT worth it.

no matter how cheap your power bill is, it's not profitable. even gpu mining which is hugely more efficient is not profitable anymore by a long shot.

Bitcoin, nope. A cheap eBay USB miner from China will outperform CPU/GPU mining per watt by several orders of magnitude.

I tried setting up a CPU and GPU miner recently for use on the testnet, and there's nothing that really works as nothing has been updated since it became a pointless exercise.

If you have a decent solar array, you may get something for your effort, but it's still better to use a USB ASIC miner.

Hah, you're funny.

Every CPU on the world wouldn't beat a single ASIC.

Or a decent AMD gpu, for that matter.

Cpu's can't touch gpu's for mining , and even them are well obsolete for bitcoin mining. So that would be a no.
