I need help with pci-e lanes and sli

I want to run two gtx 1080s but I only have 16 pci-e lanes. Will running two 1080s in 8x hurt my performance? Should I get a cpu with at least 32 pci-e lanes? I would appreciate any help anyone could give, especially since each 1080 costs and arm and a leg.

No it will not hurt your performance much, You're fine to run the 2 GTX 1080's like that in sli. :)

No, there won't be any huge difference between x8 or x16.

You wouldn't even notice it.

There were some tests where some guy way running 980 ti on x8 and another test on x16. Like 1 fps difference so margin of error.

I would only recommend getting a CPU with more lanes, If you want to run next to the two 1080 a Pcie ssd for example. If not , you'll be fine with 16 lanes
