To me looks like a SATA controller. Not a SSD. More like the Chipsets on motherboards (H87/z97/H170 etc.).

It's some what the same as the SATA ports on your motherboard, u connect your drives to it and it controls the data flow and what not, and i'm not sure about this but i think they provide slightly higher speeds than normal STAT ports on the mobo since they'll be connected through PCI-E
