It depends on the climate. In possibly the nerdiest thing I've done all week I dropped that above post of mine into a spreadsheet with climate data for Perth (where I live) and Vancouver (where LTT is based). Now according to my obviously flawless calculations on the value of Socks & Sandals here are my findings:

 

In Perth, Australia:

Nov - Apr: Sandals (too hot for socks)
May - Aug: Shoes (too wet for exposed socks)
Sep & Oct: Socks & Sandals (just right)

In Vancouver, Canada:
Oct - Mar: Shoes (too wet for exposed socks)
Apr - Sep: Socks & Sandals (just right)

You forgot to factor in the 24/7 Vancouver rain, and adjust what's considered "cold" for Canadian standards :P

If you're gonna terminate the wire yourself, may as well just punch it down directly into the jack.

 

Keep in mind that if you have Solid Core(Solid, Stays bent), you need terminators that have a V shape punch built in. If you have copper stranded(Lots of thing Copper wound in each color wire, floppy), you want the needle shaped punch built in. The V surrounds the solid wire and might not work correctly with stranded. Needle shape pierces into the strands, may not work at all with solid wire since solid wire won't get pierced.

Quick question,  were can you get bulk external cat5e ? Cable in vancouver? 

I tried a number of places and they dont even sell normal interior cat5e bulk. 

 

I see a number of people posted about using standard cat5e on the outside. But many British Columbia's should be reading up on if the cable they are using is fire rated to be inside the wall.  I didnt see any comments in regards to that

 

Any how I would prefer to use the correct cable and do it right the first time.  

Linus were did you get the cable from ?

So basically Australians see a frozen lake and think "what kind of alternate universe is this where water not only exists but can go solid?!". Canadians just think "cool, hockey". Therefore people in Canada don't worry about cold and wet socks. Which means socks and sandals are a year-round thing.

@Ryan_Vickers @camshaft i cant speak for BC but in most places any comms cabling be it coax, hdmi, CATx whatever doesn't need to be fire rated due the currents and voltages being so low.

if your wiring codes for power cabling only require normal TPS cable then you wont have to worry about data cables in your walls

here in NZ anything under 100 V DC (data is considered to be DC) is considered to be a 'safe' voltage and does not have any regulations regarding where it can be run or what type of insulation has to be used.

I know it shouldn't have to be rated for anything since the miniscule voltages and currents in a data cable are nothing compared to mains power but I have heard that it is still necessary.  I'd love to know from a pro in the area what the local rules actually are...

He did. He ran it through the wall and to to outside of his house.

 

And on a more serious note, if he were to do this his best path would be up to his attic(which he may not have a straight shot to since he has a second floor). And in order to go horizontally, he would have to go though several studs. Also, he would be risking going by some mains, which can cause EMI.

The only one I can think of is the requirement for the use of Plenum cabling in non-residental buildings(And maybe even things like apartments). Not because of the chance of the catx causing a fire, but in case something else gets hot or catches on fire.

I spotted it, and todays wiring is so foot loose and fancy free its scary to actually track.

This house I am in, the original wiring ran through specialised, insulated, fireproof ducts and intersections. Then at some point they upgraded the wiring (being a 1950's property) and its just loose power wires laying atop of insulation, between floor boards, floating up stud walls etc. Actually frigging scary. Only thing to be grateful of is there is no bodging with masking tape or something stupid at the points the wires join. 

Have been taking time with any home improvement to address this, the office/upstairs/loft space was particularly scary, when I put plugs in I just ripped the entire system out and started over, which also involved crawling in spaces that child chimney sweeps of the Victorian era would be all too accustomed too. 

Its not my fault I am grumpy, you try having a porcelain todger that's always hard!

This house I am in, the original wiring ran through specialised, insulated, fireproof ducts and intersections. Then at some point they upgraded the wiring (being a 1950's property) and its just loose power wires laying atop of insulation, between floor boards, floating up stud walls etc. Actually frigging scary. Only thing to be grateful of is there is no bodging with masking tape or something stupid at the points the wires join. 

Have been taking time with any home improvement to address this, the office/upstairs/loft space was particularly scary, when I put plugs in I just ripped the entire system out and started over, which also involved crawling in spaces that child chimney sweeps of the Victorian era would be all too accustomed too. 

There are studfinders with EM sensors that will also detect AC currents. No idea how accurate they are.

Theyre good to within 10mm (or about 1/3"). but the stud finding part is only really any good on gib lined walls but the EM sensors work really well
