5960X with 128GB DDR4 Memory

Seems to work just fine. o:

I had a question while building my Gaming Rig. I really wanted Quad-Channel DDR4 128GB memory, but I wasn't sure whether it was compatible with my 5960X. So I went with Corsair's Vengeance LPX 64GB DDR4-3600MHz memory instead. However, when I saw Linus' video about the Corsair Dominator Platinum 128GB DDR4-2400Mhz Memory, he mentioned something about the 5960X working fine with 128GB. I checked the Intel Ark website, and it said that the max amount of memory the 5960X can handle is 128GB, and his "Compensator," Build Log had an issue where the 5960X didn't work with 128GB. So, I have reason to believe that my 5960X cannot handle 128GB DDR4 Memory, but can you guys clarify?

I am looking towards the Corsair Vengeance LPX 128GB DDR4-3000MHz or Corsair Dominator Platinum 128GB DDR4-2800MHz. Can you guys confirm that these kits will work with a 5960X?

Indeed why 128GB system memory?? I´ve got an i7 5960X and I use it more than just mere gaming and 16GB are sufficient even for video editing and compressing.

If you have 64GB right now you´ll be all set for the next few years. The RAM speed isn´t really a factor for games in order to get more FPS. The difference in gaming between 2133MHz and 3000+ is diminishing and only shows in synthetic benchmarks and editing or rendering or if you had a server with virtual machines.

Guys, I appreciate your opinion, but I was asking whether it works or not. I need to run to people on my computer at the same time, so I hope that answers why I need 128GB of memory. Plus, I can't afford a Xeon, and the lower versions are not overclockable.

Both cpu and board needs to recognize it. Board recognize does not mean cpu will recognize it and actually use it. Same with ECC support. CPU supports ECC, but you will need a chipset that will work with ECC. I may be wrong on consumer i7 might not support 128GB, but I'm going to with what Intel states in their ark. The only way to find out if Core i7 will indeed support 128GB is to contact Intel and ask.

Intel just says that their X99 i7s will support 64GB and anything above that is up to the motherboard manufacturers.

A lot of motherboard manufacturers claim to have support for 128GB of RAM, but no one has proven that a CPU can actually make use of all those lovely Gigabutts - and I'm sure no one will tell you, cause they have to sell those 128GB kits somehow.

And that is exactly what I mean with that. I'm sure that the CPU can't address all 128GB and the motherboard isn't going to help with that.
Then 64GB it is, I guess.

It can support up to 46 bits of address space. 2^46 / 2^30 = 65.536GB of addressable physical memory.

That's one of the main problems with this forum, too many people telling others they shouldn't have things that they don't need. Maybe you just want 128gb of ram? Why do people here always demand a justification? it's like "if you don't absolutely need it, you shouldn't have it"

Reminds me of the California State Legislature.

You can install 8 16GB sticks of RAM on motherboards that support them, Windows and the BIOS will recognize 128GB of RAM, but you can only address 64GB of it. And having 8 sticks of RAM will limit the potential CPU overclock you can get stable too.

If you want 128GB of addressable physical memory space then you currently need to get a Xeon. Maybe Broadwell-E will support it too, we'll find that out in June.

After all of this, I will probably be going for the Intel Xeon E5-2637 v3 because it has all the specs of my 5960X. However, since the Corsair Vengeance LPX just shipped over yesterday, I will be trying the memory on my motherboard, the ASUS X99-E/ WS USB 3.1.

Anything more than 3GB a thread is a complete waste of money... if you have the money get the 5960X instead of the 5820k with the extra 80GB of ram that you don't need.

The rule of thumb for a workstation is 2GB per thread and in some situations up to 3GB a thread for rendering 4k. Anything more is a complete waste of money.

They never made that claim. They claimed that it has all the specs of the 5960X. Difference there.

That cpu is still not the equivalent of a 5960X. Can't just pick a cpu randomly just because it has 8 cores.

Xeon E5 2640 v3 runs at 2.6GHz and turbos to 3.4CHz. 5960x runs at 3GHz and turbos to 3.5GHz. Xeon E5 1660 v3 has the same specs as a Intel 5960x. Xeon E5-2640 v3 is a entry level workstation processor due to its 90w TDP and slower ram speed support of up to DDR4 1866MHz. The only advantage of The Xeon E5 2640 v3 is the ability to run on dual socket motherboards and that's about it. So if you're not planning to run on dual socket motherboards in the future, that cpu is not a good buy.

Of course they never made that claim and never will. It's us enthusiast who spotted the similarities between the two, who are saying they're basically the same cpu, with one supporting ECC ram, higher official memory support, and the other one doesn't. This has gone back to socket 775. My Xeon X3350 is basically a Intel Q9450. You can tell Intel don't like that, as of right now, Skylake Xeons will only work on server grade chipset and not the enthusiast Intel Z170 chipset.
