Overclocking the CPU didn't really change anything but the score went down to 5.8 a couple times.  Overclocking the GPU to 1200 MHz on core clock and 3800Mhz on memory gives a better result.

So my rig is only barely capable, but the SteamVR Performance Test suggests that I will only need to upgrade my GPU. That makes sense, but I also feel like it's time for me to upgrade my CPU as well.

CPU = Intel Core i5-2400 @ 3.1 GHz
GPU = His Radeon R9 280X
RAM = 8 GB DDR3
Score = 1.6

AMD Phenom II X4 965
NVIDIA FeForce GTX 960
8GB DDR3 Kingston x2

I ran the test 2 times, First Score is 0.2 and Second is 2.7

First Test is my normal GPU Settings as stock:

Second Test. I went into afterburner and set my GPU to +150 Core and +200 Memory this is the change it added

This seems to be every much based on your GPU. Most of the time my CPU in the bottle neck in my PC but this time it was my GPU

In both tests i saw my CPU running at around 70% on all core and my GPU was at 90-100% and being at 100% most of the time

GPU: 2x R9 290X (One 8GB Vapor X, one 4 GB) (Sapphire)

RAM: 2x 8 GB DDR3 (1333 MHz)

EDIT: I have retested this b/c other people with 290Xs have reported in the 'ready' range. I varied the number of GPUs and number of monitors in each run

RUN1: Default run with 2x GPUs and 3x Monitors (SCORE: 5.1)

Spoiler

RUN2: 1x GPU with 3x Monitors (SCORE: 9)

RUN5: 2x GPUs with 3x Monitors (SCORE: 7)

So, I think the AMD recording software may have been on during the first run (oops!). On every other run I made sure to turn it off. At this stage, my scores are really really weird, so if I have the motivation I might test further.

Lesson: SteamVR test does not appear to be particularly logical when it comes to hardware testing (and I am not particularly logical when it comes to laying out my results). Can other people with multi gpu/multi monitor test this? kthxbai
