750 gold rating ok?

rg4video

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bT8KrV

I am working on completing my first gaming and photoshop build. I have already begun ordering some parts and am currently figuring out motherboard, PSU and case.

I read that any reputable brand works if the railing and wattage is appropriate. I’m eying the gold rating and 650 as my lowest with 750 being more preferred.

With shortages i recognize there’s a limitation to my options. But i also want to make sure I’m not confusing brand bias recommendations with truly solid choices. I read that EVGA is disliked by many, but others don’t like thermaltake either. And corsair had to recall some of theirs recently?

Anyway, i am willing to put between 90-150 on a power supply, I am just worried about the branding and the right wattage and rating.

550w would be more then enough for this particular build.  Rating does and dosent mean much at the same time,  Basically rating indicates how efficient a power supply is at a certant watage.  There is a chart somewhere that explains it a bit better.  In terms of brand, go with a republtle brand like corsair, evga, seasonic etc.  There is a psu tier list on the forum somewhere i just dont remember where, im sure someone could link you to it.  Corsair also recalled there sfx line due to something but it was a small batch.

Current Rig=  AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, Asus Crosshair Hero VIII, EVGA RTX 3070 FTW3 ultra, 32gb Corsair Vengence Pro RGB 3000hz White, EVGA 750 P2 PSU, 1TB Samsung 980 Pro, 500gb samsung 860 evo, 250GB Samsung 850 evo, 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus, 2TB seagate firecuda sshd,  LianLi PC 011 Dynamic XL ROG edition, Corsair h150i elite capelix

Check out the psu tier list in my signature (anything tier b+ or better).

Some specifics I recommend are:

  • cooler master mwe gold
  • Corsair rm
  • corsair rmx

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Wherever you read that is wrong. I recommend you stay away from wherever you read that.

The 80+ rating says nothing about how good a PSU is, only how efficient it is. 450-550W would be more sensible wattages.

Ignore the brand, and just get a good PSU. Every brand is equally capable of selling crap.

The Straight Power 11 is available for $110. It is decently quiet and performs well.

That was their SF series, which is an SFX PSU, something you shouldn't have to worry about.

As for a PSU recommendation, I recommend something like the SeaSonic GX-550 ($100) or GX-650 ($110).

Ok.  I'm just saying...  Unless you've had to do a warranty with every company out there, I don't see how you can say that EVGA is the "easiest".

Well we had one die within a day.

EVGA have a lot more spread and variance in quality from trash right up to good and confusing model naming, so i wouldn't just blanket recommend them.

I wasn't recommending models. I was talking about their CS, which doesn't change from model to model.

I mean with the... 33 models including two prototypes I can't exactly say they have a majority of good models, most of them are either literal rebatches of an existing platform, sligithly downgraded versions of or in case their objectively "best" units smaller versions of Leadex (II/Platinum/Titanium, the real platform names are not that well known). I can't name a single actually qualifying unit in the US right now that would compare to the earlier given options of Focus GX and Straight power 11.

and with that said, service has declined in the recent years due to EVGA laying off people, sadly

I ended up with several options and chose
Seasonic Focus GX-550, 550W 80+ Gold

due to when it would ship, as all of them had different shipping dates.

I hope i made a good choice...  the other choices i had in my cart were

Seasonic Focus GX-650

Cooler Master MPY-7501-AFAAG-US MWE 750 Gold Full Modular, 80+ Gold Certified 750W Power Supply, 5 Year Warranty

be quiet! Straight Power 11 550W, BN617, Fully Modular, 80 Plus Gold, Power Supply

Uh, you are thinking about the FX/FM series which had issues with high trans. gpus. The GX/GM series was made to fix the issue basically.

Honestly, if they were the same price, the sp11 for sure, but when the difference is $10 and they are both good PSUs, I'd just go with what's cheaper.

Yeah, it'd probably be easier if we referred to the FX series as the Focus Plus series since that's what they are also called in the model name.

I think it’s interesting how of all hardware for a PC, the PSU has been the hardest for me to dissect, from interpreting biases to determining true value and quality.

I have a 3600 and 5700xt

The PSU I announced i bought won’t arrive for another week and a half, so I’m very much still open for other suggestions.
