New gaming, editing, streaming and recording build

Hey everyone, so I'm planning a new PC build. I want to do gaming, recording, streaming, edit 1080p videos and photos, do media consumption and productivity, and occasionally I do music production.

 

The games that I play are:

 

Minecraft

Valorant

Overwatch

R6 Siege

Stardew Valley

Red Dead Redemption 2

Witcher 3

Various Assassins Creed games

Dishonored 2

And random indie games.

 

I want to play and record/stream all of these games at 100fps+ on my 2560x1440p 144hz adaptive sync monitor, at the best settings possible in all of these games.

 

I've configured a parts list, and I wanted to make sure that it will be able to run all of this, and with good temps. Also, its worth mentioning that I dont plan on overclocking. Here are the parts:

 

NZXT H1 (keep in mind that it comes with a 650w PSU and a 140mm AIO)

Ryzen 9 3950x

Asus ROG STRIX B550-I GAMING Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard

G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory

Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB AORUS XTREME Video Card

And as for storage, I plan to have 2 m.2 SSDs, and possibly 2 2.5" SSDs.

 

So yeah, I'm basically wondering if this system will be able to run all of these games at 100fps+@1440p, and to also stream and record them, plus the other stuff I plan on doing, all with decent temps? Again, I dont plan on overclocking.

Sounds good, if a little (or a little more rather) overkill. I'd probably just go with a 3900X instead and a 2080 Super. I would also suggest going with the X570-I instead, since for only $20-30 more it's really quite a lot better than the B550-I.

Also, do take note that new GPUs and CPUs are coming out later this year, so if you're not in a hurry it might be worth waiting.

 

At 1440p, a 2080Ti (or even 2080 Super) should have no problem running those games at over 100FPS, except RDR2 (and also I'm not totally sure about Dishonored 2). Streaming can be taken care of either by the GPU (using NVENC) or by the CPU (since you'll have quite a lot of headroom with 32 threads, even while gaming).

You really don't need a 3950x for gaming. You'll never utilize it, and it's really just a waste of money. A 3900x is more than enough for what you need. Also a 2080Ti (especially with Nvidia 3000 just around the corner) is a waste of money IMO. It's like 50% more for like 5-10% performance boost.

 

I would recommend getting a 3900X + 2080S and using the money you "save" for a better X570 board (Unify, Tiachi, etc), and a better cooling solution (140mm AIOs are junk), I would recommend a banging air cooler, or a 240mm/360mm aio

I'd only ever really recommend using your CPU for streaming as it results in better quality streams. If he has any modern CPU it should have no issues handling that as well.

I'm getting an NZXT H1, which can only fit up to an 140mm rad. Do you think it could sufficiently cool a 3950x or 3900x without overclocking?

I personally would never buy a case that doesn't support at least 240mm rads, especially if your budget is anywhere near what yours is. It doesn't make any sense.

 

A 3900x comes with the Prism stock cooler, so while 140mm AIOs are bad and not recommended really for any CPU, it would be fine for stock speeds. But I wouldn't recommend it on a 3950x. It doesn't even come with a stock cooler, and "recommends" water, but I feel a 120/140mm isn't exactly enough. You'd be better off with a nice air cooler for sure.

Hmm, okay. If i got a Phanteks Shift X with a 280mm rad, do you think that would cool it sufficiently?

You seem to have your heart set out on that style of case.. I would recommend lots of other instead, but if you're dead set on that aesthetic, a 240/280mm aio would be a much better choice.

3700X is more than enough IMO but you can up it to a 3800X if no custom cooler is purchased... :)

I do really like that style of case, and I really want to get a Mini ITX vertical case. If you have any other recommendations than the H1 or Shift X, let me know.

I'm looking at nearly the same exact setup as you - and the 140mm AIO should be fine, honestly.

There are a variety of reviews that have the 3950x in the NZXT H1 on the included AIO, running benchmarking and it's fine. The CPU will get warm, but not close to the thermal danger zone. If you aren't overclocking, it should be enough.

If anything, it's the GPU that will hit the 80c or greater temp, but that can be negated by under-volting a touch - again covered by many reviewers.

 

I may suggest swapping out the AER P140 for the Noctual NF-A14 PWM, unfortunately I haven't seen a lot of data behind if this will improve CPU temps but it is a superior fan.

I've seen others zip tie 140mm fans on the rear of the case as well, reducing temps a few degrees.

 

Either way, I think the case should be fine. The other comments are right, you likely won't come close to using 100% of the potential of a 3950x or 3900x but it's a good system.

Don't bother with the 3800x, the gains aren't worth it.
