Windows 7 HDD won't start in different computer

Okay so I recently got a dell desktop computer without a hard drive and tried using an old hard drive with windows 7 installed onto this computer, but it won't start. Any suggestions? The old hard drive was from an hp computer, will that change things?

What hardware are you trying to boot windows 7 on?

Dell optiplex i3-3220 8gb ram

I'm using windows 7 because this computer used to be windows 7 before the hdd was taken out, and I don't have a windows 10 copy anywhere

you can download windows 10 for free, so use that instead.

 

Normally when moving the hdd between systems, esp with win7, you want a reinstall.

It probably has drivers for the motherboard or other hardware that isn't compatible with the hardware in that system. Which is when you'd want to reinstall

 

You can use a windows 7 key to activate windows 10, most of the time. The bootable media for w10 is free.

It's microsoft's ecosystem.

It still works in 2020, you’ll get windows 10 activated with windows 7/8.1 product key 

 

Microsoft didn’t fully close the windows 10 free upgrade after the free upgrade has ended

Download Paragon Adaptive Restore 2010, create bootable USB using Rufus, boot from USB and click "Adjust OS". That's all. Your system will boot. If you have problem with finding that tool, PM me.

 

Of course this is solution if your win7 won't boot because of blue screen. If not boot at all, then change BIOS settings to Legacy.
