Why do I have such a bad upload speed?

So I have 500 mbps download speed to my desktop (according to speedtest). But my upload speed is around 20 mbps. This seems off. Is there a specific reason that it is low. When I did a speedtest on my phone, I got 30 mpbs up. I think it is weird my phone got a higher score wireless that my desktop wired. All tests were done with speedtest.net and the mobile app. Thanks, and sorry I am a novice at networking.

 

 

Update: My ISP limits me to 20 mbs up. Dumb cause I have 500mbps down.

When ISP do you have?
Verizon tends to match the speeds or come really close where as Comcast/Xfinity tends to have very fast download speeds with trash uploads.

Well a good first start would be checking what your plan is with your ISP. Not everyone does symmetric UL/DL and not everyone delivers what they say (someone I know has 400/25 and gets that and I've got 200/15 but only get 160/15).

It's fairly typical I believe for ISPs to offer much more download speed than they do upload

Cable and DSL providers have low uploads. On the cable side it’s due to the fact they are limited to 5Mhz to 42 MHz on the upstream side. Docsis3.1/4 is supposed to fix this. But this requires a lot of investment on the ISP’s side. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
