What Kind of GPU For My New Build?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Hey guys,

I'm getting ready to start a new build, so I'm shopping around for parts.  I've picked up a few components already, but really need to nail down a graphics card.

The new computer will mainly be a workstation, no gaming really, and I'll be using programs like Photoshop for graphic design and photo editing, but my main reason for installing a video card will be so that I can do some video editing work with Vegas Pro 14 (and maybe Vegas Pro 15 in the future).  I won't be doing really heavy video editing, mainly stuff at 1080, so I shouldn't need anything too crazy.

Here's the list of components I have so far:

AMD Ryzen 7 2700x

Gigabyte B450 Motherboard

32Gb of DDR4-3200 RAM

Also, I'm kind of on a budget, so I'd like to stay somewhere around the $200 and under range.  So I'm looking for the best card I can get for around the price that will get the job done.  I'd also like to look at a Radeon card and unfortunately, at least at the moment, need one with a DVI port (Hoping to be able to upgrade the monitor in the future).

I've seen some highly rated cards on sites like NewEgg and Microcenter, but I've never really shopped for a video card before as my previous builds have mainly been budget PCs. This time I'm building with a workstation in mind and since it's been a while since my last build, I'm a little behind on the tech that currently available.

I'd really appreciate any information or suggestions you could give me.  Thanks!

I think my current monitor supports DVI right now, but will probably update to one with HDMI support in the future.

Can always grab a cheap adapter as well.

Here's one of the cards I'm considering, but it's been a little tricky trying to figure out which cards are recommended for Vegas Pro.

I don't know what is better for Vegas Pro and by how much.  I do know you're best bang for buck new is the RX line tho.

The RX590 is nice.  Others may have more info or find better deals tho.

Ebay is your friend, I just brought a used 1060 6G for $135 for similar usage on my new build. It's just way too pricey to spend $200+ on accelerated video encoding/decoding features.

I'm really hoping including a video card will increase render speeds. Right now, without a graphics card, it takes hours to render home movies. We're talking like 6 to 8 hours to render a 2-3 hour home movie and build an image file for Blu-ray. It's crazy. Then again, my current processor isn't great either.
