Upgrade graphics card or not

Ok, so my computer is about 3 or so years old

now and I’m wondering if upgrading the graphics card would be worth it right now as games are just too slow. My problem is with my specs, I’m not sure if the cpu bottlenecking is going to be so bad that any performance gain is negligible. Or maybe there are new graphics cards coming out I’m not aware of that I should wait for or maybe I should upgrade the CPU first. I’m looking to significantly increase my performance so I can play games at least at 144fps 1080p or 1440p. (I understand that with my cpu at first its gonna be hard but it’s my goal eventually.) I was thinking about a rtx card. 

 

General spec:

r9 380

fx 8320

toshiba 2tb harddrive (see previous post about issues)

16gb ddr3

600w power supply

 

Let me know what your guys opinion is!

With that CPU, forget it. Get new platform first.

Even if your GPU is underwhelming your CPU really is too much of a limiting factor(sadly FX line up really is somewhat obsolete nowadays).

 

So I must advise you into keeping the R9 380 and focusing on upgrading your platform first, you may want to wait another 2 months for Zen 2 release or jump into a Ryzen 5 2600 already if you don't want to wait.

I’ll probably wait for zen 2 or go mid to high tier intel then if it’s that bad. Thanks! Have any recommendations for intel or zen with the type of performance I want?

I'd shoot for a Ryzen 5 when Zen 2 launches.

If all you do is game and you want a CPU with good longevity I'd say that the i7 8700K fits like a glove, however do wait for Zen 2, they might somewhat match that performance for cheaper.

After reading up on zen 2 yeah I probably will go that route or the 9600/9700k with intel.

I’m in a broadcasting class and edit so maybe not that one.

It's a perfectly fine CPU for any kind of workload

You'd get a larger performance boost upgrading the platform than upgrading the GPU.

As someone who went from FX 8300 4.4GHz to Ryzen 5 1600X while keeping the R9 380X I can tell you the performance jump is huge.

Yeah rn the gpu seems to be lower on my list of needed upgrades.
