980 ti for productivity

I can’t decide what gpu to get. I do mainly 3d modelling/rendering (c4d, vray ) and video work ( after e Not much time for gaming unfortunately

How does the  980ti hold up against 

1660ti/rtx2060/2070/2080 for my purposes?? 

i would love to get a 1080 ti but those are insanely expensive where i live. 

i have the following in mind: 

TR 2950x, silver arrow tr4 cooler, 32 gb corsaire vengeance lpx, asrock taichi, antec 750w psu, cooler master h500p.

no it's not... a 980 sli would get beaten by a 1070 ti and a 2060 goes around a 1070-1070 ti from what I've seen

Thanks!! I was worried the lower clockspeeds in the 980ti would do me in!! Would i need sli support for multi gpu?

A 980 is equal to a 1060 6GB. I've owned a 1060 (both 3GB and 6GB), 980, and a 980 Ti.

@JoostinOnline so would you recommend the 980ti over 1660ti/2060/2070 as well?? Do the cuda cores compensate for lower clock speeds???

Well considering you're mentioning the 2080 in there...go for the Radeon VII. That thing was built for productivity. It's a cut down Radeon Instinct card. And it shows too, because in some workloads it puts the pain on even the 2080ti. It has 16gb vram and HBCC, it's a productivity monster for an amazing price. From a gaming standpoint it doesn't offer much other than the huge vram for the future, as it currently gets beaten out by the 2080. But from a productivity standpoint it's a no brainer for the price.

 

Don't look past Vega for productivity. It's a compute beast, and for heavier workloads the higher vram as well as HBCC is a dream in comparison to Turing. Even Vega 56 and 64 are great options too at the moment, the price is currently very attractive.

but 1070 will probably be somewhere in between the 1660 ti and 2060

I would do amd but cuda cores offer more in terms of software flexibilty ( octane etc ).

The 980 Ti will perform like a GTX 1070 Ti on Cuda Acceleration and is a fine enough alternative if that's your focus.

It really depends on what prices you get. The 2060/2070 are better cards, but they might not be better deals.

 

That being said, I wouldn't recommend an NVIDIA card for productivity. I'd suggest Vega 56 or 64 (depending on what you can afford).

@JoostinOnline the problem with amd is lack of compatibility with octane renderer. There is simply more around for nvidia xhe to their market share. But i suppose it depends on your application and area or work. Using primarily c4d i felt pretty limited using fire pro on my old trashcan mac. The firepros were amazingbut there was and still is a lack of support for amd on render engines i was interested in. Prorender has implemented but to say it sucjs is sn understatement.

I missed your post about using Octane Render.

 

The decision is ultimately yours. Currently the RTX variants don't offer a lot of benefit, especially considering the added cost. Assuming it's the cheapest, I'd get a used GTX 980 Ti, and possibly upgrade down the line if your needs (and software support) changes.
