Need a New Router... Any Suggestions?

So, my router crapped out, and I'm in the market for a new one. I'm thinking of the Netgear Nighthawk x10 ( https://goo.gl/Rx1brg ). Do you think that's overkill or is there something better? Any other suggestions? -Thanks!

I wouldn't touch that with a 40ft pole, but not because of the price, brand, or even the hardware - 802.11ad is going to be replaced by an updated version called 802.11ay this year, so if you want the latest I'd wait for that to be officially standardized. Of course, it means nothing if your devices also don't support 802.11ad or ay standards, so keep that in mind too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Alliance#WiGig

However, I actually like most of Netgear and ASUS consumer products because most (but not all) can run some form of OpenWRT or DD-WRT linux based firmware, allowing for much more granular control & monitoring of my network, not to mention advanced features such as having Transmission-BT built into the router so you can connect a hard drive and voila! NAS download station on the cheap. (A dedicated NAS is still better, but this is a nice feature for something like a torrent server that doesn't require a full blown PC on 24/7 which will save on power, too.)

We need more context though...

  • How big is your house? How many floors? Do you have dead zones or a basement?
  • How many devices (and what kinds of devices) does your household use?
  • Where is your modem / router currently located, and if it's not central in the home, can it be moved?
  • If the modem / router can't be moved, are you willing to purchase a MESH networking system instead?

60 Ghz WiFi is pointless. 60Ghz will NOT penetrate any walls period. Shit when Linus did his Wireless AD video, one of the routers did not penetrate the cardboard box it came in. Your better off sticking with AC or waiting for AX routers to come out.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

In enterprise we are dying to get this. Zero penetration, no cross talk, isolated APs. Yes please.

  • Where is your modem / router currently located, and if it's not central in the home, can it be moved?
  • If the modem / router can't be moved, are you willing to purchase a MESH networking system instead?

So the answers to your questions:

1. My house is about 30ft long and it's at one end on the top floor. It's three floors, and we dont have any "Dead" zones, although the signal is quite weak in the basement at the other end, but there will be an ap down there at some point so that's not a problem.

2. According to the Linksys Control Panel, we have about 15-20 devices running on average at the same time, with most of them being smartphones/tablets, and our system of Amazon Echo Dots.

3. My modem and router are currently located (Like I Said) On the top floor of my house at one end. We could move it, but then it would just be in the basement In about the same place.

4. Like I said, We're going to end up installing ap's at some point, but it'll probably just happen when we get a new router, or if we're bored someday. I'd prefer to just install ap's instead of buying a MESH system, but I'm open for any suggestions you guys can throw at me.

Also, would you consider WiGig (60ghz) a good investment or not, beings that only a few devices support it and it's SUPER short ranged? Would it be a good future-proofing measure?

-Thanks

(Btw sorry for not getting back to you for a few days I was out of town all weekend and didn't get a chance to check it)

I really like the Ubiquiti gear. Getting something like the UniFi Security Gateway, adding in a POE switch, and then APs as required. Leaves lots of room to upgrade individual parts in the future as required. It's a little more expensive but I find it to be well worth it. I run the Unifi gear at home and at a number of family members houses.
